Rainy weather limited crowds at the All-Town Fourth of July event at Hawkeye Downs. Officials reported 7,947 attendees, well below last year’s 22,160, but remained optimistic about future turnouts and fair activities continuing.
On Monday night at 6 and 9 p.m. final performances of The Bells and The North Door at Grandstand. 8 p.m. Showboat Marionettes at Fun Time square. Tuesday Merchants Day features 1 30 3 30 5 and 8 p.m. Showboat Marionettes at Fun Time square with a 2 30 p.m. fabric technique demonstration by Connie Allis in the Fine Arts building. 3 p.m. Trinidad Tripoli Steel band and the Sound Generation at Grandstand. 4 30 p.m. Demonstrations of techniques in the Fine Arts building. 7 30 p.m. Trinidad Tripoli 9 12 p.m. Dancing at Fun Time square.
Wet conditions forced changes at Hawkeye Downs as tractor pulls in four classes for 1000 dollars in prize money went on while stock car races were canceled. The Linn County Historical Society display of antique machinery ran its last day. A Cedar Rapids recreation commission stage and Cedar Rapids city band were moved and postponed due to the mud and rain.

Washington report says wealthy farmers including Senator Eastland and actor John Wayne reorganized land holdings to skirt new farm subsidy limits. Cotton, wheat and feed grain subsidies will remain near last year’s $3.3 billion, despite hopes for savings. Eastland’s family formed eight entities on a 5200-acre Mississippi delta plantation, with about $160,000 in subsidies. Wayne and partners receive around $218,000 while lease arrangements push more than $500,000 to others.
Washington AP Blount the Post master General says there is no need for a postal strike as unions negotiate toughly with the U.S. Postal Service which began operations last Thursday. He notes no rational impetus for a strike and doubts one will occur.
Fifteen paintings valued at 270000 dollars were stolen Sunday night from the Paris businessman's apartment, police reported Monday.

A three car collision on I 65 about two miles north of Jeffersonville killed ten people and seriously injured one. Margaret Popplewell 27 Louisville drove a southbound car that crossed the median into Prentis Willen 41 Shirley Ind. The Popplewell car struck a second vehicle carrying Willen’s family and a third car driven by Joseph Tegart New Albany. Eight others in the Popplewell car and Willen car perished. Stanley Wiken 17 died later at a hospital.
The Fourth of July weekend cost at least seven Iowans their lives in traffic accidents. Allen Seelman, 19, of rural Oxford died in a three car crash on highways 6218 in Coralville at 9 51 a m Sunday. Seelman was a passenger in a car driven by Thomas Kriz 20 of Iowa City which collided with a car driven by Alice Wienike 65 of rural Oxford. The third car driven by Constance Yashimura 26 of Iowa City collided with the Kriz auto moments after the initial impact. Yashimura was not injured but Kriz and Mrs Wienike were taken to Mercy hospital in Iowa City. Kriz was in good condition there Monday morning and she was in satisfactory condition. Seelman was born Sept 15 1951 at Iowa City and had just completed six months training with the national guard. He had joined his father in running the family farm. Surviving are his parents four brothers seven sisters and two grandmothers. Services set for Wednesday at 10 am at St Peters Church Cosgrove. A Rosary will be recited Tuesday at 8 pm at George L Gay funeral home in Iowa City. Authorities found the body of Ann Kolhoff 29 of Council Bluffs in a grove off a county road about three miles from there.
Washington reports say American diplomats are quietly probing Hanoi's willingness to negotiate its latest peace proposal. Kissinger met Thieu in Saigon as part of a three city mission to Saigon Bangkok and Paris to assess Hanoi's intentions and the package's negotiability.
Argentine authorities say they will try the Braniff hijacker Robert Lee Jackson for air piracy and theft, rejecting U.S. extradition requests. Jackson and Guatemala companion Lydia Sanchez surrendered at Buenos Aires airport after the jet was halted and refueling blocked. The FBI charged Jackson with air piracy and assault with a deadly weapon. the plane began Friday from Acapulco bound for Algeria after hijackings across Monterrey, Lima, Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires.
In Singapore Vice President Agnew argues North Vietnam could launch a pinpoint attack to achieve a public relations coup, aided by U.S. media overemphasis. He says the strike would not militarily succeed, but would be portrayed as a failure of Vietnamization, testing U.S. restraint and South Vietnamese defenses.
