ISU Researchers Seek Radio Clues to Tornadoes
Iowa State University physicists led by John Stanford with Michael Lind and Gene Takle study unusual high frequency static on AM radios during storms as a potential tornado warning. A grant-funded setup records seven channels via high speed tape, RCA equipment, and WOI-TV radar data to monitor storms up to 100 miles away. The team notes not all tornadoes produce static, but persistent motor-like interference may signal a tornado.
