Iowa Governor signs nearly 100 bills by midnight
Des Moines Gov. Robert Ray signed about 100 bills before the deadline to avoid delayed effect. A major tax school aid package raises income taxes, freezes local school spending, and uses ensuing shifts in funding. Critics say the plan burdens working people and falls short on promised relief. Also signed were a used car sales tax, a higher beer tax, and a Broadlawns family practitioner program, while two measures on general services and vehicle safety were postponed for study. Colesburg alumni picnic set for Sunday noon with 25 and 50 year graduates honored.
