Iowa GOP urged to stall Job Service cuts in state
Iowa Republicans pressed during a Senate session to block 217 layoffs of 361 Job Service staff and the closure of 41 satellite offices amid federal spending cuts. Lt. Gov. Branstad sought Reagan to let states fund Job Service, arguing 80 cents of each dollar paid by Iowa employers is sent to Washington and returned.

Iowa Prisons Drop Below Cap Cuts Projections
Corrections Director Hal Farrier said Iowa's prison population fell to 2,633, below the 2,650 ceiling, avoiding mandatory steps. The Board of Parole released 126 inmates this month, including 22 Tuesday and 24 Friday from halfway houses to reduce counts amid a Friday deadline. If above 2,650 for 45 days, a state of emergency triggers board review of nonviolent offenders to reach 2,550. This marks the second overcrowding emergency after last fall.
