DES MOINES The local option tax bill failed to pass final Senate vote 25 to 24 after Sen. Julia Gentleman dissented. Sen. Readinger then switched his vote and filed a motion to reconsider, keeping the measure alive for a possible comeback in a few days. The proposal would let cities or counties seek voter approval to levy a surtax on income taxes or a fixed vehicle fee, with proposals to earmark revenue for property tax relief debated and rejected.
