Eugene M. Brown founder of the Tama Pack Co. has been legally declared dead by a Polk County Probate Court order signed by Judge A. B. Crouch. He has not been seen since 1971 and his last known address is Fort Lauderdale Florida. Brown led Tama Pack and Triad Securities as the firm collapsed after selling 3.6 million dollars in Tama Pack stock in one week.
Canadian defense chief says readings in the Northwest Territories stem from equipment malfunctions or natural uranium outcroppings and no man made radioactive material has been found. The search for Cosmos 954 debris is expected to end this weekend.
Washington UPI report notes that 17 major U.S. firms with a combined worldwide income of 2.5 billion paid no federal income tax in 1976. The study found an average effective rate of 13.04 percent across 168 companies, with several other firms paying under 10 percent.
Alton Franks, 43, sentenced to death in Oklahoma City for the traffic death of Brandi Michelle Harris after an armed robbery incident. He allegedly wrote a letter claiming plans to enter Cedar Rapids Police Department with two machine guns and kill officers within five minutes, saying the guns were in Texas. The letter surfaced in a Work Release Center official’s testim ony and remains under scrutiny.
National Airlines Flight 120 from Miami to Newark lost all three engines 10:15 a.m. after starting with one failing at 10:13. The Boeing 727 glided to Jacksonville where one engine partially restored at 10:16 and all three were back by 10:18. No injuries among 103 passengers and seven crew. FAA and National Airlines investigating. weather not a factor.
Eighty nine percent of minority candidates fail the Jan 12 written police exam versus 22 percent of whites. Eight of nine minority candidates miss the passing mark, while 12 of 55 whites fail. Acting chair Jan Kazimour says the result shows minority presence and high female performance, though the test faces criticism for cultural bias. The 150 question general intelligence exam, overseen by Professor Richard L. Holcomb, mirrors the Army test and has drawn objections from local civil rights groups and federal agencies.
