Hybrid Bean Research Breakthrough Reported
Washington AP Agri culture department scientists report they have developed a male sterile line of soybeans that could lead to hybrid seed. The work was done by ARS and the North Carolina Agricultural Station Raleigh NC. The USDA notes the sterility system will give breeders more crosses to try and advance hybrid soybean programs. Dr Charles A Brim says the economic importance remains to be determined but calls this the first step toward that goal.

Cattle Markets Still Show Seasonal Patterns Says Agriculture Dept
The Agriculture Department notes wide seasonal changes in cattle marketings and prices have leveled off but still follow historic patterns. Feeder cattle remain highly seasonal due to carrying patterns and feed supplies, while fed cattle markets show less of the historical seasonal swings. Livestock producers adapt management to rising and falling prices, with seasonal highs and lows continuing, especially for nonfed cattle.

Kyl Proposes Farm Legislation to Restore Acreage Rules
Dorothy Williams reports from Washington that Rep. John Kyl introduced several agriculture bills. One would reinstate the 25 acre erosion base as a feed grain base eliminated by the 1970 act, limiting eligibility to farmers and testing acreage before removal from production. A second bill, tied to the 1970 act, allows small farms to remove up to 20 percent of acreage from production with livestock feed considerations. A third measure seeks to modify treatments and waste handling to reduce payments and expand processing options for seed and materials, with implications for hobby farmers.

Farm Leaders Challenge Nixon Plan for Agriculture Reorg
Washington critics from NFU and farm groups oppose President Nixon’s plan to reorganize the agriculture department into four new agencies arguing it would weaken programs and fail to address rural needs. They warn the move is political public relations and would scatter functions. Rep Poage defends a separate cabinet department to meet food needs.
