Hog Lift Moves Hogs Out Of Iowa To Lift Prices
Corning reports the National Farmers Organization launches a hog export drive moving hogs hundreds of miles to higher price areas. NFC president Oren Lee Staley says quotas will be set for each region to create a market vacuum in heavy production areas and push hog prices up. Members in Illinois Nebraska Minnesota Missouri Indiana Ohio and Kansas will join the campaign, shipping hogs mostly by truck to the eastern seaboard. Staley argues farmers are being robbed as consumers pay high prices while farmers receive only about 60 percent of former earnings. He warns of aggressive actions to secure fair prices and notes processing and retail outlets prosper while farmer power remains weak.
