The January 24 1950 issue reports a cold wave across the state with highs around five to twenty degrees and mixed rain or snow later. It notes divorces decreed and local fire and police calls, plus multiple funeral services and births in several Iowa towns.
J W Darragh won the Buchanan elementary heating and ventilating bid with 64137 34 dollars, beating Davenport Plumbing and Heating by 67 66 after alternates. The board noted steel delays from a coal strike could affect construction, while plans for temporary heat and other equipment purchases were approved.
McElhinney operator of Ce-Mar midget racing asks a judge to determine if the All-Iowa Agricultural Association acted beyond its authority by contracting for midget and stock car races at Hawkeye Downs. Judge Thompson granted leave to file a quo warranto suit with a $100 bond, as McElhinney opposes tax subsidized competition with his investment and questions fairground uses beyond statutory purpose.
Star of the West lodge Knights of Pythias held a Monday night meeting in Cedar Rapids to present 50 year membership certificates to Charles Francis Clark Thomas Avery E L Dieman Harry Hedges W L Hoffer George Walker and Mose Privett Others earning awards but absent were E M Soboda and Adrian Young Thirty seven members were awarded 25 year certificates Frank D Sheppard Past Grand Chancellor oversaw arrangements.
Forty hearse and limousine drivers walked out in a wage dispute, forcing funeral homes to reschedule services and seek emergency equipment. The AFL union represents drivers and picketed four livery firms while the Minneapolis Funeral Directors Association planned to appeal to Gov. Youngdahl for intervention. The workers previously earned 50 dollars weekly for sixty hours and sought 62.50 for a forty-eight hour week after their contract expired January 11.
The will of George A. Kindler was admitted to probate in Marion after his death on January 10. Emery J. Miller was named executor without bond. The will provides 250 to Marion Methodist Church and 250 to Boone Eastern Star Home, with library books left to Marion Public Library. The remainder is divided among heirs including Nina May Straubinger Alberta May Marsh George L. Straubinger and Bertha Logan and shares to six daughters of Mrs. Logan.

James F. Williams faces costs as Judge G K Thompson grants Mrs. Louise Williams suit money of 50 dollars and 150 dollars for attorney fees. The order also sets 20 dollars weekly support pending termination of the suit amid his 16th marriage ending and a separate maintenance action.

Edward John Sullivan 49 of 1406 Thirty third Street NE pled guilty to drunk driving and was fined $300 and costs with installment plan. Martha Luber will probate. M H Luber named executor and sole heir. Two account suits filed against Franklin Jayne of Acme Roofing and Insulating Company seeking $288.68 and $249.65.
Allan B. Kline of Vinton Iowa, head of the American Farm Bureau, surprised the National Cotton Council by urging a degree of government protection within a system of regulated free enterprise. He supported social and economic improvement through individual initiative, warning that alternative approaches could lead to dictatorship. The council had favored unfettered free enterprise per Charles E. Wilson.
Howard Kyle an 18 year old Ames magazine salesman was shot with a .22 rifle near Riverside after a man helped free his car. Kyle claims the shooting was accidental and the assailant who carried the rifle had not been located by Tuesday afternoon. He was hospitalized in Washington Iowa in fair condition.
Western Germany on Tuesday approved recovery aid totaling 4,493,000 dollars to finance U S purchases of soybean oil.

James Plummer age 66 of 727 H street SW Cedar Rapids died at his home Monday evening after a long residence in the city. Born in Elberton Georgia he served as a porter at the Union Station and belonged to Fidelity lodge I B P O E of W. Surviving are his son Charles a University of Iowa student and his sister Zephrel Fartson of Elberon. The funeral will be at Mt Zion Baptist church at 2:30 p.m. Monday with Rev B H Hunter. Burial in Linwood cemetery. Friends may call at Rice funeral home Wednesday evening.
Blanche Cook widow of Homer D. Cook, aged 60, died Sunday evening at her daughter Mrs. Francis Peterson’s Davenport home. Survived by daughter Mrs. George Slaughter and son Richard Cook of Montrose, IA, plus four grandchildren. Services at Schmidt Funeral Home Keokuk Wednesday 3 p.m. Burial in Keokuk.
Services for John Hasley of Walford area will be held at Holy Trinity Church Walford at 9 30 a.m. Wednesday with Rev Stephen Tushak officiating. Burial follows in St Michael's Cemetery Norway. The body lies in state at the Polansky chapel with visitation Tuesday evening.

Edward J. Beckwith of Morrison filed a notice of appeal to the state supreme court from a first degree murder conviction and death sentence. Beckwith was sentenced to death for the mutilation murder of Mrs. Irma Jean Stahlhut, 22, Morrison tavernkeeper's wife, with the sentence set for Dec. 4, 1950.
Davenport AP reports the Iowa Inspection Bureau outlined six factors contributing to the high loss of life in the St Elizabeth hospital fire. The report, by W L Brayman, cites delayed discovery, poor evacuation planning, hard to release window bars, excessive combustible interior finish, inadequate fire stopping and venting, and reliance on a single responder. It recommends automatic sprinklers as the most dependable safety measure for such facilities.
Sigourney sheriff reports nine break ins Monday night in Keokuk and Washington counties. Keokuk county targets include Sigourney High School robbed of 35 dollars and Hedrick School entered with nothing taken. Washington county sites include two schools with March of Dimes collections stolen, plus a locker plant, a lumber office and two filling stations. Mt Pleasant also hit. Authorities suspect a single culprit may be behind all the break ins.
James F. Keevers was honored at the Roosevelt hotel for 25 years as secretary of the Cedar Rapids Rotary club. A wrist watch inscribed Cedar Rapids Rotary to J. F.
