Price and Rent Exemption Set by Cost of Living Council
The Cost of Living Council exempted rural retail firms with annual sales under 100 000 from price controls and about 45 percent of all rental units from rent controls. The exemption targets small mom and pop retailers and affects roughly 17 percent of retail sales and 7 percent of firms nationwide. Exemptions cover single family rentals and certain apartment and owner-occupied dwellings, removing about 10 million of 230 million renter-occupied units from controls. The council aims to focus wage price controls on areas with inflation potential while excluding many small service and neighborhood retail firms from such controls. There are about two million retail items nationwide, with roughly 16 million under SIINC in gross business receipts.
