Social Security Numbers For Pigs Proposed by ISU

Iowa State University extension veterinarians Dr. John Herrick and Dr. John Berthelsen proposed a universal social security number like tag for every pig born in Iowa to aid disease tracking. They cited Iowa’s 22 million annual swine output and noted identification could trace infections like dysentery TGE and brucellosis to farms of origin, especially with animal movement between farms and markets. They suggested using ear tags or ear tattoos and considered using the last six digits of SSNs, while calling for stricter health standards on breeding swine movement and broader disease surveillance across the industry.

He moved to revoke food stamp cuts, boost wheat idle acreage payments, release rural electric loan funds, expand conservation subsidies, advance a corn price support program, fund a new pesticide management effort, and initiate an experimental land access program. He also secured 59 million dollars in previously impounded rural telephone loan funds and pledged further aggressive spending if needed to retire acreage and stabilize prices.
