Clarence Kriz of Cedar Rapids attempted a second escape from Johnson County jail Thursday after Sheriff Pat Murphy unlocked his cell to take him to district court for a habeas corpus hearing. A two block chase ended with Kriz recaptured. he serves six months for a bad check and argues pretrial time should count toward his term. Judge Harold Evans is considering the petition.
Gerald Simpson, 17, an AWOL soldier from Baltimore, told Circuit Judge J. Howard Murray he preferred prison to the army. He received three years for three burglaries after fleeing Fort Dix on December 29. He said he would become a civilian as soon as possible.
Washington AP reports Senate Republicans rejected 29 to 10 a proposal to give new GOP senators a larger voice in senate affairs.

Harry D. Bellamy 66 longtime Cedar Rapids business leader and chairman of Concrete Materials and Construction Co died of cancer in a New York hospital. He built a major Iowa and Illinois sand and gravel network, co owned Waterloo firm with T. E. Rust, and led Cedar Rapids operations since 1946. Funeral rites are scheduled for Saturday with survivors including a daughter K K Kinsey and two sons Fred E and Howard J Bellamy.

Nebergall described the November 8 1950 chase in Des Moines when two Chicago semi pro players Butler Adams and David Johnson were arrested. Iowa seized a 1950 Buick and a 1950 Oldsmobile and Adams confessed to stealing a third car a 1950 Chevrolet. Authorities linked stolen cars to Wisconsin and Madison titles as part of an interstate inquiry involving FBI and Wisconsin officials.

Services for Mrs. Charles S. Smith of 1408 B avenue NE will be held Friday at 1 30 p m in Turner chapel with Rev Allan E Schoff of Central Park Presbyterian church officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial cemetery with friends allowed to call at the chapel.
Former Cedar Rapids resident Mrs T J Day who died in Oak Park HL after a long illness will be laid to rest in Oak Shade Cemetery Marion. Turner chapel hosts services at 3 30 p m Friday conducted by Dr Marvin B Kober pastor of St Paul's Methodist church. Friends may call at the chapel.

Word has been received of the death of Frank Flanagan at Santa Ana California on Wednesday. His wife Monica Ryan Flanagan long worked in Cedar Rapids insurance agencies. Services will be conducted in Santa Ana Friday.

Des Moines resident John Howard Ford aged 25, a SUI College of Commerce instructor, died of cerebral thrombosis at University Hospitals Iowa City. He had been hospitalized since December 30.
