Two children aged 2 and 3 died in a Friday fire at their grandparents home in Nevada Iowa. They were David Handeland and Dennis Handeland, sons of Ron and Mrs Ronald Handeland of McCallsburg.
President Truman said he remains solidly behind his Fair Deal program but notes defense measures must have top priority in the current emergency. He assured reporters that no principles or programs will be abandoned as the administration emphasizes rearmament.
Gov. Beardsley said Iowa may temporarily draw on the state reserve fund to pay about 7.6 million in unpaid World War II bonus claims. A Senate bill proposes an 8 million dollar appropriation with a 400 thousand dollar cushion, the unused may revert to the general fund. He plans to restore the 8 million to the reserve by year end if enacted.
Six Mount Mercy Academy students Connie McNamara Marjorie Kucera Marian Basile Bette Ann Schechtman Eleanor Kucera and Audrey Davis had their poems selected for the annual high school poetry anthology to be published.
Ninety eight men from Cedar Rapids area were announced as joining the armed forces with 1 in the army 48 in the air force 41 in the navy and 8 in the marine corps. The lists include multiple named recruits from Iowa counties and towns and note new Des Moines processing and limited quotas for air force and navy.
Mrs Charles Johnson was re elected president of the Community Nutrition Service at the annual luncheon meeting held Thursday at the Montrose hotel. New officers include Mrs Raymond T Ashlock as vice president Mrs Frank Callahan secretary and Mrs Edna L Wilson treasurer. Dr Fredrick B Lehman named to the board until 1952 with Mrs Callahan and Dr Murray also serving. Thirty attended the luncheon.
T. F. McPartland was elected president of the Cedar Rapids Traveling Men's Club at the 37th annual meeting known as the Goodfellows. A. E. Morehouse joined the board, with Walter C. Rice Peter Bailey and Emil Padera as officers and Ralph Anderson Clyde Satterly re elected to the board. The group honors 22 deceased Goodfellows listed by name.
Funeral services set for James K. McKee 25 of Cedar Rapids killed when his truck left Highway 30 six miles west of the city. He served in World War II and worked as a truck driver for Ryan Transportation. Survivors include his wife Lois and two children Michael and David, his parents Lloyd and (Mrs.) McKee, a grandfather Ralph Chiverton, and brother John. Burial in Linwood Cemetery with arrangements at Beatty chapel.
Edna DeLaHunt wife of Harold DeLaHunt of 521 Third Avenue Southwest died in an automobile crash Wednesday. Funeral services are at 1 30 p m Monday in the Chapel of Memories with Rev H G Schwegler officiating. burial in Cedar Memorial cemetery. She was born April 25 1890 in Volga and married June 19 1909 in Cedar Rapids. she was a member of the First Lutheran church. Surviving are her husband a daughter Mrs Harold Janss of Memphis a son Neil E DeLaHunt of Cedar Rapids an adopted daughter Leah DeLaHunt Witkin of Oelwein six sisters Mrs Alice DeMara of Sioux City Mrs Mary Lucy DeLaHunt of Hettinger ND Mrs Jennett Emblem and Mrs Celia Sumock of Oelwein Mrs Vera Kleiman of Cedar Rapids and Mrs Alta Becker of Redding VT and three grandchildren.
Marcus Richard Walter 96 of 800 Thirty-sixth street NE Cedar Rapids died at home Thursday at 5 15 p m after a brief illness He was born May 15 1854 in Waubanca Kansas and lived in Cedar Rapids 15 years since coming from Marion in 1929 Surviving is his son Mark O Walter Services will be at Turner chapel 10 30 a m Saturday with Dr Galen L Rose First Christian Church officiating Burial will be in Cedar Memorial cemetery Friends may call at the chapel
The observance for Harry D. Bellamy who died will be at the Chapel of Memories with Dr. Andrew E. Kurth of Westminster Presbyterian Church officiating. Entombment follows at the same chapel. Friends may call at Turner chapel until noon Saturday. Master Masons meet Crescent lodge at Masonic hall 3 15 p.m. Saturday.
Dora E AmEnd widow of Rev H AmEnd and Cedar Rapids resident for 25 years died in a Marion nursing home at 9 30 am Friday after a brief illness. She lived with her daughter Mrs Ann Morr at 1132 C avenue NW. Born in Germany November 15 1868 she leaves two daughters.
Four-year-old Carolyn Joan Purcell returned to Georgia amid disagreement over her eye condition. Mayo Clinic doctors found no cancer, diagnosing an inflammatory eye issue treatable without removing the eyes, while Atlanta specialists at Grady Memorial Hospital maintained a retinoblastoma diagnosis and urged caution.
Mrs. Morr and Mrs. Leona Hes senius of Cedar Rapids are noted with a son Al Zorning of Minneapolis a brother William Eggers of Keystone a brother John Eggers of Long Beach a sister Mrs. Mary Broen del of Newhall seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She belonged to Trinity Lutheran church and its ladies aid. The Turner chapel will conduct services at 1 30 p m on Monday with Rev E H Widmann. Burial follows at the Lutheran cemetery in Newhall. Friends may call after 1 p m Saturday.
Rol lin O Lynn 63 longtime Rock Island station agent at Columbus Junction died suddenly at home after reporting for work. He had served as operator before promotion and was a Masonic lodge member and former school board member. Survived by wife two daughters Barbara and Clara Anton, son Rollin Jr, and four grandchildren. Body at Stephens funeral home. funeral arrangements incomplete.
DES MOINES AP. Iowa work injuries last year rose 62.6 percent over 1949, according to the Iowa Bureau of Labor. The bureau cites more firms reporting injuries by law as the cause. December injuries totaled 739 versus 792 in November, a 6.7 percent drop from November to December.
OTTUMWA AP John Morrell and Company meat packing plant here was partially idled by another labor management dispute Friday. There was no pork processing going on. The stoppage, third of this week, concerns transfer of men from one job to another and differing interpretations of contract clauses. The company said there will be no meeting until the men return to work, ending what the company calls a strike.
Glenn Drebert one of four men accused of burglarizing the Paul Kirchner garage in Garrison on December 30 was sent back to Vinton from Omaha by Deputy Ed Thompson. Charged with larceny from a building, Miller and Gerald Barkdoll refused extradition. Richard Barkdoll remains at large. The burglary produced 100 dollars, five tires, five batteries, and six cases of antifreeze.
Twelve Iowa county men will report for induction into the armed forces Jan. 22 at Des Moines. The draftees listed to be sent to Fort Sheridan Illinois for assignments include Harry S. McGrath and Donald L. Fettkether of Marengo Vernon E. Garringer Hugh Lanca Murray E. Hall of Williamsburg Ralph V. Raine Davenport Raymond J. Shine Kenneth G. Schultz Ralph M. Keller and Edwin D. Carlson of Victor Norris Dean Bigbee Belle Plaine and Wilford R. Schwarzing South Amana.
In Taegu Korea President Syngman Rhee stated that South Korea would confront any rearmed Japanese forces sent to aid the Chinese Reds He declared he would fight the Japanese before expelling the Chinese describing clear resolve to resist Japanese involvement.
Washington government to issue order reducing octane ratings to cut tetraethyl lead use. Interior Secretary Chapman says engines will not be materially affected though late model cars with high compression motors may need spark timing adjustments.
William R. Herod of New York, president of General Electric, has been offered to head and coordinate the arms program of the 12 NATO nations in Europe. Deputies of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization selected him to oversee the rearmament drive.
Metropolitan opera star Rise Stevens was confined to her home after glass splinters cut her right eye during Thursday’s Der Rosenkavalier performance. The stage glass shattered in act two when she dropped a wine glass, but she continued the show after the house physician removed the fragments.
Vinton consolidated school district files condemnation to take about four acres plus a residence and outbuildings on the town south edge from Mr and Mrs Phillip W McKevitt. The land adjoins existing district property where a new 650000 high school is planned. Proposals offered include 12000 cash, 10000 land with removal, or 8000 with life estate to the McKevitts. They have not accepted any proposal.
Rep. Tom Martin of Iowa's First district was elected chairman of the all Republican Iowa house delegation. Officers include Rep. Karl LeCompte, Rep. Ben Jensen, Rep. Henry Talle, and Rep. Paul Cunningham. More students left the University of Iowa to join the armed services, with five earlier withdrawals returning to school. The total now in the armed forces is not fully stated.

Paul A. Nelson of Webster City filed a personal injury and property damage suit against Clara Jayne Shells burg for an accident on highway 149 two miles south of Cedar Rapids on Sept 18, 1950. He alleges cuts to hands face and knee with a permanently scarred face and seeks 1119.12 including 397.37 for car damage 6.75 for hospital bills and 15 for doctor bills.
John E. Goemaat Friday pled innocent to operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent. He was released on a $500 bond after being indicted by the January term grand jury. He is accused of taking a motorcycle owned by Donald G. Carter on November 2 without Carter's consent and possessing a machine damaged valued at $341.
A divorce action filed by La vernia Wilson against Bennie Wilson was dismissed Thursday on motion by the plaintiff.
The will of Nellie M. Abbe, who died December 20, names grandchildren Marjorie J. Samuelson and Donald A. Holloway as executors without bond and sole heirs. Income from estate property is left to Laura A. Boisvert and Leona B. Holloway. The will of Ludwig Hemsky, who died December 23, names his widow Stephanie as sole heir and United States Bank as executor without bond.
Judge J E Heiserman ordered the Moravec Olson partnership dissolved as of November 12 1949. Olson was awarded judgment of 357 83 against Moravec and given Olson the assets and liabilities of Beacon Engineering Company.
The Associated General Contractors of Iowa elected C. C. Diehl of Jefferson as president at a Des Moines meeting. J. Ray Van Buskirk Hawarden and J. D. Armstrong Ames were named vice presidents, with H. L. Hoak Des Moines as another officer. The group backed the Iowa Good Roads Association and tax equalization, and urged legalization of the contract termination clause. D. F. Duteau of Lincoln warned of class conflict but said free enterprise can prevail if war arises.

Two women were injured, one seriously, at the N. B. C. Wood box factory in Manchester on Friday morning. Howard Dubois, 23, suffered a possible skull fracture and was in a semi conscious condition at the Delaware county hospital. Marvin Glendennen suffered head injuries but was not hospitalized. The men were struck by large pieces of a 20 inch log which exploded while it was being processed on a lathe.
A two car crash on highway 44 north of West Bend killed Mrs. Marvin Bonstetter 18 and left her husband 21 injured. The second fatality, John J. Brakke 60 of Cylinder, died Friday in an Algona hospital. Bonstetter’s husband survived in fair condition.
