Coe Fine Arts Festival Panel Debates Tradition in Modern Works

A five member panel at Coe's four day Fine Arts festival discussed whether contemporary arts are traditional. The discussion featured James Johnson Sweeney Leslie Chabay Allen Tate Dr Max Schoen and Willard Arnett with Richard B Hudson moderating. Tate outlined symbolic and metaphorical poetry while Schoen criticized contemporary music for technical skill without clear meaning. The panel argued that true modern art remains tied to past traditions through renewed expression and that contemporary artists must continue to experiment while seeking beauty and meaning.
