A 60 year old Waterloo man Percy Bradley was fined 1000 dollars by Federal District Judge William F. Riley for operating a 20000 dollar a year numbers and policy racket without a federal gambling stamp. Bradley was placed on 20 months probation with pay at 50 dollars monthly.

Des Moines AP reports four million dollars of the state's rainy day reserve bonds were sold to cover cash shortages. State Treasurer M L Abrahamson and State Comptroller Glenn Sarsfield cited dwindling cash, delayed school aids, and a 1953 legislature appropriation as factors. The 30 million dollar fund was created in 1949 at Gov Beardsley's request.
The appropriations were to be paid from a 30 million reserve fund. Abrahamson said more revenue will begin coming in soon. Sars field noted that selling four million in bonds will also bring in 146 400 in interest.
Senate and House leaders from both parties praised the President's address as a clear plan to preserve freedom. They highlight a policy of peace with strength to deter aggression, domestic legislative action, and a robust military, including a powerful air force ready to strike back.

Paul Lee Abrahm Hughes, 48, of Twenty-second Avenue SW Cedar Rapids, died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 7:45 a.m. Thursday after nine years of illness. He was an operating engineer for Concrete Materials and Construction Co. from 1937 until last year and earlier worked for Builders Material Co. A World War I veteran, he belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Operating Engineers local 34 AFL. Surviving are his wife Ruby Naylor Hughes, a son Jack, a grandson Larry, five sisters and a brother. The body is at Janeba funeral home. funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Kenneth E. Lamb an engineer with Fairbanks Morse died in Rockford Memorial hospital Illinois after a six month illness. He was born in Waterloo and survived by his wife Lillian Gifford Lamb two children and other relatives. Funeral services will be held in Beloit at 4 p.m. Friday.
Carrie Cooper, 1885 born Story City, widow of David Cooper of Marion route 2, died at home after a long illness. Survived by sister Judy Christensen of Hucl ey. Funeral 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Turner chapel with Rev. Richard Engstrom. burial Cedar Memorial cemetery. Friends may call at the cemetery.
Scott Gordon Gilster two days old died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 7 am Wednesday after being born January 3, 1955. Survived by parents grandparents and great grandparents. Body taken from Turner chapel to Monona for funeral services at Schultz funeral home conducted by Rev Tom Fuku yama and Rev Wyne Hilmer. Burial in Monona cemetery.
Mrs. Jane G. Lawson of 2054 ranksin avenue NE is informed of the death of her uncle Miller W. Strayer age 68 formerly of Cedar Rapids now living in Ames for about 15 years. Funeral services are Friday at 11 a.m. Adams funeral home Ames with burial in Waterloo. He is survived by his wife and another niece Zelda Van Deusen of Cedar Rapids.

Mrs Minnia Bell Engel 67 died at home in Cedar Rapids at 6 25 p m Wednesday after an extended illness. Born June 13 1876 in Princeton Ia she moved from Davenport to Cedar Rapids 15 years ago. Survived by husband Albert Engel two sons Michael Banks Geesey and George W Geesey a daughter Viola three grandchildren and five great grandchildren three brothers Stephen Rook Cedar Rapids Frank Davenport and Charles Princeton and three sisters Mary Day Davenport Martha Dawson Bettendorf and Miss Marie Rook Princeton. Harry E Hepker age 56 of 1427 B avenue NE Cedar Rapids died at home at 9 am after a sudden illness. Born Nov 29 1887 in Green Grove he was married to Lurene Ullrich on July 3 1954 in Cedar Rapids. He leaves three sons Eugene Leo Ernest T Hepker a daughter Mrs Maxine Schoon over a sister Mrs Harry Jones two brothers and seven grandchildren. Funeral plans pending with Turner chapel.
