Clearwater Florida police say John Donahue was found dead in a hole behind his home after attempting to install a spigot on a water pipe and apparently cutting into a gas pipe by mistake, becoming overcome.
A capacity crowd at Coe College witnessed the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo open the four day Fine Arts festival with four ballets from Swan Lake to The Mikado. Maria Tallchief led as Queen of the Swans with flawless poise while Nina Novak Irina Borowska Yvonne Chouteau and others shone in supporting roles. The 20 piece orchestra and full staging complemented a vigorous tour performance that filled the Cedar Rapids stage with classic and modern ballet.

Gilbert Stein Hook, 28, a farmer ten miles north of Pella, was fatally injured Tuesday when a ceiling collapsed on him during demolition of an old house on his farm. His widow and two young children survive him.

Auto and truck license renewals in Linn county run ahead of last year but many will miss the January 31 deadline. About 500 vehicles per day are renewing in the courthouse lobby as Deputy Treasurer Tom DeWees notes 1,100 per day needed to finish by the ninth. After January a penalty of $1 or five percent applies. Through Monday 9,110 cars had been reregistered, up from 6,373 last year.
A second will in Janet R. Main's estate was admitted to probate by Judge Floyd Philbrick. Mrs Main died Sept 17 1952, with a 1944 will granting equal shares to her three children or their survivors, following a prior 1950 will set aside for undue influence by daughter Ruth Weidner.
Heirs to Mrs. Main are Mrs Weidner J G Clapsaddie Edna Main and Mary L Main widow of Fred W Main In probate the first will was set aside and Mrs Weidner appealed to the supreme court The appeal was dismissed last month for failure to prosecute the case The estate value was estimated at about 140000 and Mr Main ran a large vending machine business.

A five member union asks Linn county board of supervisors for a 15 cent hourly raise from 1.55. They seek 90 days sick leave and four hours pay for after hours emergency road work. No decision made. another meeting planned next week. The board reappointed county engineer staff and increased nurse Marian Van Fossen’s pay from 310 to 325 monthly after merit exam.
Virginia R. Miller filed for divorce from Bert E. Miller but the suit was dismissed Monday by the plaintiff.
James L Kilts age 36 of 200 Twenty-ninth avenue SW pleaded guilty to false uttering of a check. Judge Charles Penningroth suspended a four months sentence in Linn County Jail. Kilts was arrested December 30 for writing a $103 43 check in Cedar Rapids.

Victor Carlson 715 Fifteenth Street SE Cedar Rapids resident for 50 years and retired Rock Island brakeman died at his home after a long illness. Born May 18 1878 in Pomeroy he married Jennie Anderson in Cedar Rapids Sept 19 1906. He served 43 years with Rock Island until retirement in 1943. Richard Alan Dvorak two month old son of Mr and Mrs Edwin Dvorak of Fairfax route 1 died in a Cedar Rapids hospital after a long illness. Private services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Czech National cemetery with the Brosh chapel in charge. Survived by his parents a sister Joyce Kay and his grandparents Wesley Benyshek Emma Dvorak all of Solon.

Waterloo district Judge George Heath upheld Cedar Falls city ordinance requiring dogs be penned. He affirmed a $15 fine against Dr. S. W. Barnett in Mayor Cundy’s court from May.
