Stocks Open Year With Steep Decline On Weak Dollar
The New York market opened the year with a sharp drop as the dollar weakness spurred selling. The Dow fell 8.32 to 220.85 at noon, while the Big Board index slipped to 52.08 and the American Exchange index dropped to 127.40. Volume reached 7.83 million on the NYSE. Southern Co. traded 120,000 shares at unchanged 17 percent, the most active NYSE issue.

Cedar Rapids hog and sheep market shifts and dairy eggs
Cedar Rapids Tuesday hog market ended $1 lower on butchers and $0.50 lower on sows with ranges for 200 to 230 lb butchers at $41.00 to $41.75 and 300 lb sows at $34.00 to $34.50. Sheep market held steady from $60 to $62 for lambs and $55 to $60 for wool lambs with 105 lb plus lambs discounted. Iowa egg prices edged down a few cents while demand stayed fair and stockpiles rose. Livestock receipts in Joliet showed hogs $1 lower and cattle mixed, with steers and heifers strong on high grades and cows weaker.
