Northwestern Bell in Cedar Rapids will no longer release unpublished telephone numbers to law officers. A Des Moines spokesman said subpoenas are required, and the practice may have stemmed from a misunderstanding. Linn Sheriff Orlie Workman acknowledged using the service in emergencies but not since directory assistance was moved to Des Moines. Other agencies may have accessed unpublished numbers occasionally.
Fort Bragg soldier Spec. 4 Jerry Tindal and Nelson Peters survived a double parachute failure when Tindal fell onto an opened chute and slid to safety in late December. Tindal escaped with a sprained leg and credited protection to unseen help while Peters pulled him to the ground. Tindal spoke to a Florence, South Carolina newspaper but declined Fayetteville Times interview due to his commanding officer’s objection.
Homicide detectives in St Petersburg Florida investigate the shooting death of William Coburn 71 a former Cedar Rapids resident. Coburn was killed Monday night when two intruders tied up his wife Roxie and looted their two bedroom home in a Florida Gulf coast neighborhood. No suspects yet police Lt W R Keener said cash and personal effects were taken.
Downtown Cedar Rapids merchants won relief as the Iowa Natural Resources Council unanimously found earlier floodway figures inaccurate. The Second Street mall project will be a half block away from the floodway, though still in the fringe area.
President Carter tentatively endorses dividing the Civil Service Commission into two agencies an Office of Personnel Management and a Merit System Protection Board to separate duties of managing personnel and protecting employee rights. The plan awaits congressional action while observers note governance and conflicts of interest would be addressed.
President Carter and Anwar Sadat outline in principle Palestinian self-determination during talks in Egypt. Carter then travels to Paris to meet Valery Giscard d Estaing on energy and security while Israeli PM Begin rejects Palestinian state plans. Gov. Ray appoints Brig. Gen. Junior H. Burkhead of Boone as adjutant general of Iowa to fill an unexpired term ending June 30, 1979. Burkhead is promoted from colonel to brigadier general and follows Maj. Gen. Joseph May who retired last fall after a critic period.
