The House passed a treasury post office supply bill totaling 1.5 billion dollars on Friday. The measure includes social security reserve funds and an appropriation to begin a transatlantic airmail route.
Des Moines hosts the National Institute on Farm Tenancy and Land Tenure where W W Alexander chief of the Federal Resettlement Administration outlines a three point plan. Proposals include low down payments a 3 5 year probation and a 40 year amortization at 2 percent interest with 1 8 percent principal. The discussions cover land protection against abuse speculation elimination through windfall tax graduated land tax and a national homestead pattern. Other sessions address security of tenure and ownership risk with Ed O Neal and Harry Brown speaking.
The Business men's volleyball team of Cedar Rapids, coached by Harry Falmer, captured leading honors in the Mississippi Valley tournament at Davenport last night. The lineup includes George Farmer, Roy Harger, Robert Harger, John Emery, Ed Ralph Yuill and Sid Leibsohn. Mrs. Shean left for San Francisco, while Mrs. Maier and relatives arrived from Germany. Marjorie Grant suffered a fractured ankle after a slip in front of her home.
Seventy five members attended a picnic luncheon and a performance titled The Deep South presented Friday at the club house by the Cedar Rapids Woman's club dramatic art department. Mrs C L Gunn wrote and directed the play. Magnolia Manor served as the setting for both the prewar plantation visit and the present night club scene.
Powell was elected president of Post C of the T P A L at the annual meeting held Friday in Sokol hall. The Woman's Relief Corps met at Memorial hall for a patriotic luncheon. Washington table marked 1776 and Lincoln table marked 1864 featured symbols of the era. After lunch the group sang America with musical and literary performances by Dr. Gunn Miss Giblin Elmer Young Charles Youtzy Earl Sandstrom Maude Roth and George R. Griner who spoke on Revitalizing Our Patriotism.
Mrs. Raymond Happel of 1060 Tenth Avenue SE hosted a Thursday afternoon party at her home in honor of Nancy Lou Happel s second birthday. Attendees included Mrs. Leo Bishup with Sharon Marie, Mrs. Bert Puckett with Shirley Ann, Mrs. Everett Morrow with Darce Ann and Roger Allen, Mrs. James Dougherty with Carolyn Ann, Mrs. Ray Murdock with Bobbie, Mrs. William Brown, Miss Nina Smith, Miss Margaret Henderson and Billy Ray Happel. Mrs. A. A. Happel assisted hosts.
Mrs H K Focht of 315 Eighteenth street SE hosted circle No 1 of Central Park Presbyterian church for a birth day luncheon at her home. Twenty five members and two guests attended with spring flowers decorating the tube and Mrs Focht in charge of the program. Mrs M D Porter gave the history of the circle and a social hour followed. The group will meet next at Mrs F M Wells 116 Eighteenth street NE.
Fourteen members of the Queen Esther circle of the King’s Daughters met at Mrs. F. L. Shramek’s home 2118 Grande avenue SE on Thursday afternoon for a luncheon and business session. Mrs. Lewis Emerson led devotions and Mrs. F. J. Lightner reported on Dr. Jennie McCowan. The group spent the afternoon sewing with Mrs. Forrest Hines assisting.
Past presidents of Star No 4 Degree of Honor celebrated twenty years with a picnic supper at Mrs Nora Mulvihill's home 516 Sixth Avenue SE. After the meeting attendees played pinochle and banco with prizes awarded to Mrs Mabel Walsh and to Mr and Mrs Henry G Meyn.
Miss Margaret Waery hosted the Ella Swan circle of Bethany Congregational church at the parsonage. Members answered roll call with valentine verses. Marie Mittan reviewed Getting Along With People by Milton Wright.
Mrs. Thomas Kendall hosted the Lucky Day club at her home on Center Point Road NE. Prizes were won by Mrs. Henry Kendall and Mrs. Joe Baker.
The Big Springs P. T. A. marked its fortieth Founders Day with a Friday evening meeting at the school led by Mrs. W. L. Northcutt. Program chair C. A. Long announced acts including a clarinet duet by Clifford Drummey and Paul Lenk with Adora Sykes, a vocal duet by Marjorie and Virginia Glime, and a child training talk by Mrs. S. V. Shonka. Refreshments followed with individual birthday cakes as red and white decorations framed the event.

The Peoples church school of religion held a Friday banquet with about eighty attendees. Mrs. Small and Mrs. Pichner led dinner duties and Mrs. Garwood handled arrangements. R T Termohlen introduced speakers G C Claassen and Rev Melvin L Welke. An amateur program followed with John Cabinett hosting.
Lambda chapter gathered Thursday at Mrs. Nellieve Peckosh home 1248 Third Avenue SE. Refreshments were served and patriotic decorations highlighted the meeting with guest Mrs. Pierre Tracy in attendance.
Chicago and North Western officials announced the purchase of eight new passenger train locomotives from American Locomotive company. Delivery is set for about Sept 1. The 4-6-4 engines will haul 14 to 16 standard weight cars at 120 mph, with 38 tons engine and tender, 25 tons coal, 22,000 gallons water, and 84 inch drive wheels.

In Nashville on a Saturday blaze at the W. E. Stephens Manufacturing building collapsed upper floors trapping three firemen. Seven others were injured as flames spread to the Neely Harwell building. The Iowa Senate endorsed a homestead tax relief bill aimed at preventing refunds to out of state owners. First applications would go to county supervisors by July 1, with first refunds in the second half of 1936 taxes. The session also heard a landlord lien moratorium proposal to shield tenant farmers from eviction until March 1, 1937.
A sit down strike at Fansteel Metallurgical in North Chicago defied court orders as 82 workers resisted 125 deputies. Violence followed with clashes against a 200 deputy force. Detroit plants saw wage gains and recognition as several thousand workers staged actions nationwide. A Labor Federation council called a proposed peace conference with the CIO.
Illinois topped the nation in corn production in 1936 with about 218 million bushels, while Iowa produced roughly 212 million. A crop review released by A J Surratt of the Illinois and federal agriculture departments notes this marks the first time since 1915 that Iowa did not lead as the nation’s king corn.
Henry Ford blamed international financiers for labor unrest and urged workers to stay out of unions. He argued unions curb competition and criticized plans to enlarge the Supreme Court, saying the judiciary would gain too much power. Ford spoke at his Bryan County winter estate near Savannah.

The Third Avenue Third Street East drug store operated by E M Young sold to W E Wixstead from Churchill Drug. The Marion Commercial club organized with E D Bowman president J W Bowman vice president and C O Ingersoll secretary treasurer. Rev C F Ensign left for Omaha for a foreign missions meeting. W P Robinson resigns from Golden Eagle to join the Fair store team.
Dr. Boozer former dean of men at Coe College dies after a career with Evangelical and Presbyterian churches. Survived by wife, three daughters, two grandchildren and other relatives. Memorial services set at Coe chapel in Cedar Rapids and in Ames with bodies lying in state, burial in Ames.
In Chicago, a criminal court jury deliberated about one hour ten minutes to convict Frank Whyte and Stanley Murawski, paroled convicts, of murdering Policeman Michael Toth and sentenced them to die in the electric chair. Judge John Prystalski scheduled March 1 for a new trial motion hearing and postponed execution pending that outcome.
Loyalist soldiers on the Morata front have added the American doughboy tune Over There to their campfire repertoire. The move signals cultural exchange amid the front line routine.

Major actions include a $20,000 damage suit by Marjorie Bacon against Concrete Materials Co over a fatal truck accident near Cedar Rapids, plus numerous divorce, injury, and note actions involving Linn county residents and local businesses.
McKinley high School staged a minstrel show Friday night in the auditorium to raise funds for band uniforms. Edith Reed drew repeated encores for The Lonesome Road and Swing Low Sweet Chariot while Don Hersch as Mr Bones impressed with pantomime and delivery. The program featured The Little German Band, Peggy Bode and Laura Huston in duet acts, and a group finale under director Paul Anthony with audience singalong.
