He said U.S. immigration laws will be enforced fairly and humanely while Mexican President Lopez Portillo noted workers often feel compelled to sell themselves in the United States. The leaders spoke to a joint Mexican Congress and discussed trade energy and migration as ongoing challenges.
The United States grants full diplomatic recognition to the Khomeini government in Iran and withdraws recognition of the shah as head of state. Ambassador Sullivan will seek talks with Prime Minister Bazargan as Americans flee on chartered Pan American flights. The move drew U S criticism of Soviet broadcasts and occurred after Iran executed four former shah generals, including SAVAK chief Nassiri, at Khomeini's Tehran headquarters.
Benjamin Willie Love, 34, faces a murder in the first degree trial set for April 23 after a Linn County Grand Jury returned the indictment. He is charged in the Jan 23 Land H Lounge shooting that left Ernest Gibson dead after being on life support at Mercy Hospital.
In Wilmington Delaware a brick rowhouse fire killed seven people including a 66 year old homeowner Harry Alexander and his family of six. The victims named Stella Alexander Edward Debra Delores Debra Ann Edward and Kimberly. Alexander was hospitalized in critical condition after leaping from a second floor window. The fires occurred within 41 hours and a mile of each other as investigators probe possible connections.
