Cedar Rapids authorities plan a 23 000 square foot Linn County Juvenile Courthouse next to Eighth Avenue SW on the old Freeway Lounge site. The 4 foot fill increases flood protection to above the 2008 level, with bids sought in April and construction set for May.
Cedar Rapids man Steven Cooley, 60, who had represented himself, pleaded guilty to second degree burglary and habitual offender charges in Linn County District Court. He faces up to 10 years, with sentencing set for April 13. Cooley had sought a new trial after being granted one in December for insufficient notice of lesser charges.
A Dubuque high school assistant principal, Shane Oswald, pleaded not guilty to sexual exploitation by a school employee, distribution of a controlled substance, and providing alcohol to a minor. Prosecutors allege he had sexual contact with a 17 year old Hempstead student at his home. authorities say the girl drew a diagram of the house interior. Oswald, held on 50 000 bond, remains on leave and cannot enter the high school. His next court date is March 8.
Johnson County deputies arrested Dean Edward Atkinson 50 of Lone Tree Michael William Elliott Jr 38 and Steven John Ranberger 43 of Muscatine on methamphetamine and other drug charges after a search near a rural property. Paraphernalia marijuana and manufacturing materials were found. All three were released from jail on their own recognizance.
