Marriage debate in Iowa blocked by Democrats in Des Moines

Traditionalists pledged to regroup in November after minority Republicans failed to force debate on a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman. Proponents of same sex marriage praised Democrats for blocking the effort to overturn the Iowa Supreme Court ruling. New University Lab Slated For Oakdale Campus Move

Cable barriers may reduce deadly crashes but raise minor wrecks

Cedar Rapids will install cable barriers on Interstate 380 this summer. Officials say the trade-off is fewer fatal cross median crashes, though more minor wrecks may occur. DOT notes 15 of 371 traffic deaths in Iowa in 2009 were cross median crashes, about 4 percent.

Cable barriers slow traffic safety report notes increases

Justin Foss reports that from 1990 to 1999 the Federal Highway Administration notes a 2.4 percent rise in accidents while safety improves. Welch cautions drivers pay less attention as traffic grows with a 30 percent rise in total traffic and 50 percent more truck traffic over the past decade.

Bijou cancels planned porn film show at UI theater

The Bijou Theater at the University of Iowa canceled midnight screenings of Disco Dolls in Hot Skin after US officials asked leaders to pull the weekend event. Interim VP Tom Rocklin said public interest and educational objectives justified the cancellation.
