The Cedar Rapids school board set March 9 for a public vote on 2.75 million dollars in school bonds to fund new elementary schools and additions. Polls will run 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with the same polling places as the last bond vote, and petitions totaled 2,860 signatures. The same election also fills three school board seats.
A Cedar Rapids woman Mrs. Warren Boldt and her family survived a weekend storm near Hunstanton England. Her husband Sgt Warren Boldt is with the U S Air Force at Sculthorpe base. In the flood they lost possessions. car and home swept away. Six Americans died in the storm and 15 English killed with 30 missing. The Boldts have two young boys and are safe after the flood.
The Iowa House debated butter substitute and tax measures with narrow votes on motions and recommendations. A workers compensation attorney fees bill failed 54 to 48. Other actions included bills on municipal primaries, inheritance tax reciprocity, prisoner meals, and highway permits. Senators proposed tax filing changes, lobbyist registration, and labeling rules for imitation ice cream products.
Cedar Rapids Board votes five to zero to raise starting pay to 3100 for teachers with a continuing shortage. Spokesmen note weak college output and préfère for high school roles, while Superintendent Parker urges more Iowa teacher training and University collaboration to raise supply.
The board discussed salary schedule changes for new hires and experience credits. Five years of outside teaching will now count fully toward placement, replacing the prior eight year path. The panel also allowed retirement beyond 65 on a year-by-year basis if useful to the district, with more rule actions expected later.
A burned out underground cable at the Twenty-ninth Street substation caused a Tuesday morning power outage for residents on both sides of First Avenue East to Cedar Memorial cemetery. Overload triggered the burnout. repair crews spooled overhead wires and restored power by 11 20 a.m.
Special to The Gazette Jack Spencer sixteen was accidentally shot Monday afternoon while cleaning a .22 caliber rifle at home in Vinton. He was reported in fair condition at Virginia Gay hospital. the bullet entered the right chest and ribs but did not strike vital organs.
James Baugh a 38 year old Cedar Rapids resident was trapped for about 20 minutes when his left leg was caught in a rauger type shaft at the Don Berry storage elevator 800 block Vernal Street NW. Firemen and volunteers cut the shaft with an acetylene torch and he was taken to St Luke's hospital with non critical injuries.

William Cejka 68 of 610 Thirty-first Street NE Cedar Rapids died at Oakdale at 1 a.m. Tuesday after a brief illness. Born October 18 1884 in Cedar Rapids he worked for Allis Chalmers as a boiler maintenance man for over 20 years. Survived by wife Agnes three sons Charles Dallas Texas William and Jerry Cedar Rapids a daughter Mrs O E Carpenter Cedar Rapids six grandchildren a sister Mrs Frances Rocarek and two brothers Frank and Charles all of Cedar Rapids. Memorial services Thursday at 2 p.m. in Janeba funeral home with burial at Cedar Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Russell B. Millburn aged 33 years died suddenly at his home in Cedar Rapids at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. Born February 8 1908 in Marion he married Gladys E Guttenfelder on July 29 1938 in Cedar Rapids. Surviving are his wife his mother Mrs Mary Olive Millburn Cedar Rapids a sister Mrs Neil Warner San Diego seven brothers Sumner G Waukon Armour V Cedar Rapids Lowell F Chicago Lewis A Jeffersonville Ind Lawrence J I Lynn and Donald C Millburn San Diego. Burial will be in Linwood cemetery. Friends may call at Turner chapel.
W. Chihak funeral details note burial in St. John's cemetery with American Legion post conducting military rites. Father Chihak to recite the Rosary at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with friends invited.
Nell Jensen 70 of 13600 avenue NE died at home at 9 32 a m Tuesday after a long illness. Born Oxford September 22 1882 she lived in Cedar Rapids 45 years and was affiliated with Immaculate Conception church. Survived by husband Earl C Jensen a son Donald T Jensen of Cedar Rapids a brother Albert J Dalton of Oxford and one grandchild. Body at Monahan funeral home funeral announcement to follow.
Ralph W. Brown 63 a Cedar Rapids native moved to Chicago 30 years ago died there at 8 a.m. Tuesday after a brief illness. He was an architect for Leonard Construction Company Chicago. He leaves wife Alice a brother Jim of Chicago and sister Sue of Phoenix. Services 1:30 p.m. Friday at Turner chapel burial Oak Hill cemetery friends may call after 1 p.m. Thursday.
Christian William Kohl 44 year Cedar Rapids resident died in Tacoma Washington Sunday Funeral services will be at Turner chapel at 1 p m Thursday conducted by Rev W R Ehlert pastor Kenwood Methodist church Burial will be in Cedar Memorial cemetery Friends may call at the chapel after 10 a m Thursday
Antonia Kerchill born in Czechoslovakia July 15 1869 died in a Cedar Rapids nursing home at 2 15 p.m. Monday after an extended illness. She lived in Fairfax ten years and is survived by four daughters Mrs Joseph Holland of Elkader Mrs Burton Champlin Mrs John Arends of Cedar Rapids and Mrs Leland Gosnell of Alburtie net. a son William Kerchill of City and six grand children. Burial will be in Fairfax cemetery following a 3 30 p.m. service at Barta Hesser chapel conducted by Rev Anthony W Chihak of St Wenceslaus church. Friends may call at the chapel.
Robert L. Potter aged 84 lifelong Swisher area resident dies at Cedar Rapids nursing home after a long illness. Born near Swisher September 3 1865 he is survived by sister Jennie Lambert Cedar Rapids and brother George Guthrie Okla wife Ella Strang Potter died 1947. Funeral at Brush chapel 2 PM Thursday by Rev H G Schwegler with burial in Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
Funeral services for Joseph W. Jasa longtime Cedar Rapids resident who died at Oakdale sanatorium will be held Wednesday. The Kuba funeral home conducts at 8 30 a m and St Wenceslaus Church at 9 a m with Rev Anthony presiding.
Word reached that Roy Sufficool of Los Angeles died Sunday. He was 70 and a former Cedar Rapids resident. Funeral services and burial were planned for Tuesday in Los Angeles. Survivors include brothers Orlando B. Sufficool of Moravia Iowa and Glenn A. Sufficool of Cedar Rapids.
Mrs Walter Mader died Sunday and services will be held at the Barta-Hesser chapel at 1 30 p m Wednesday. Burial will be in Linwood cemetery.
An explosion aboard the British aircraft carrier Indomitable in the Mediterranean near Malta left one crewman missing. The ship limped toward its base with a blackened midship area after flames swept from a hangar to the ship’s center.
Mrs. Frank E. Siglin of North Scranton and Mary O'Hara, long separated since World War I, found each other after 32 years thanks to a Scranton Tribune story about Mrs. Siglin's search. They had lived within five miles of each other for years.
