Cleveland AP report says Bob Feller signed a 1953 Indians contract after seven minutes. Hank Greenberg would not disclose salary, but sources say Feller will earn 40 000 with a 20 percent cut from last year when he went nine and 13. He notes good stuff but poor plate control and aims to improve in 1953.
Otto Vogel of the University of Iowa and ex-boxer Tommy Gibbons will headline the Legion Night sports program at Memorial Coliseum on Tuesday Feb 17 at 8 p.m. Proceeds benefit Cedar Rapids junior baseball. tickets are $1 and available at local shops and Legion Post.
Center Point faces a decisive next week in the girls district tournament at Coe Fieldhouse with top scorer Dorothy Huckins sidelined by a sprained ankle. Coach H P Main’s Pointers, 19 4, rely on a quick break and hasty guard play to offset their short lineup as Huckins’s status for Monday’s first round with Charlotte remains uncertain.
Monticello defeated Mt. Vernon 62 to 55 in Wamac conference action as Darrell Stelgues scored 19 for Monticello and Bill Kamerling 15 for Mt. Vernon. Monticello also won the reserve game 29 to 20. In Traer Dinsdale, Traer beat Traer 45 to 43 as Jim Young scored the decisive basket in the final 25 seconds and Voetberg led all scorers with 20 points, marking Dinsdale’s second loss of the season.
In a basketball roundup, Gladbrook blanked Dysart 59 to 38 as Jean Stein led Dysart with 74 points while Wegner and Overton contributed double digit totals for Gladbrook. Robert Knoop totaled 18 points for the roundups.
In a local matchup, Victor beat Millersburg 54 to 43 in the girls game with Folkers scoring 29 points, while Millersburg won the boys game 66 to 59 led by O'Meara with 24 points. Foster topped the Millersburg scoring with 22.
Waukon topped its league rival 49 to 44 in a Tuesday Upper Iowa conference tilt. Ler scored 17 for the winners while Schultz added 11 and Lindbloom nine. Engelhardt led El kader with 14, with Kramer and Davidsaver adding 10 each.
Oran boys won 54-44 led by Heineman with 25 points while Coppen shaver added 12 for Stanley. The Stanley girls won 70-37 with Weston scoring 23. Steinbronn led Oran with 18 as the teams split the night.
Benton County games show Van Horne 90 Blairstown 47 with Van Horne leading 50 45 at the stop. Keystone 64 Belle Plaine 47 then 42 in rematch. Norway 77 55 Atkins then 74 57 Atkins. Garrison 58 25 Urbana 57 47. Several other county pairings across Cedar Consolidated Clayton Delaware Linn and more with scores listed for each contest.
Calvary Baptist won its eighth straight game without defeat in the Cedar Rapids Church league Tuesday night, defeating Latter Day Saints 56 to 35. St Pauls edged First Lutheran 32 to 31, and Sharon EUB beat St James 48 to 36.
Garnaville clinches both boys and girls Upper Mississippi titles, Olin girls secure Jones county crown, Oxford Junction boys near a tie, Colesbury boys unbeaten for Delaware title, Greeley girls at least tied, Oxford and Clarence clinch multiple conference banners, Springville, Lowdon, Sigourney, Oelwein set up potential crowns, Roosevelt and Davenport eye Mississippi Valley share, Franklin and Keystone targets for ties, plus Little Five and Fayette county showdowns to settle titles.
Jack Kramer defeated Frank Sedgman 11-9 and 10-8 after turning a 12-9 lead to win Tuesday night in their cross country tennis tour.

Morley girls edged Onslow 33 to 31 with Hoppe scoring 14 and Siver 12 to lead Morley. Onslow boys defeated Morley 43 to 34 as Wasson dropped 19 and Vernon scored 17 for Morley.
Lisbon defeated Wyoming in both girls and boys divisions. Joyce Hall led the girls with 23 points in a 43-36 win while Morningstar scored 13 for the boys in a 46-29 victory. Nissen scored 20 for the Wyoming girls and Soper added 11 for the boys.
DeSales of Ossian defeated Ridgeway 65 to 39 as Joan Hawkins scored 29 points while Geraldine Ryan added 19 for Ridgeway. Ridgeway boys fell 69 to 26 with Ron Harvey collecting 19 points.
In Benton county league action Atkins-Norway defeated Atkins in both girls and boys games. McArtor scored 39 to spark a 77-55 girls win while Dorothy Haerther added 28 for Atkins. In the boys contest Atkins won 74-45 with Garwood pouring in 30. Mumford and Hatfield each had 15 for Atkins.
Chelsea defeated Geneseo 71-55 as Mary Coleman scored 35 points and Coleen Casey led Geneseo with 18. In the nightcap Geneseo’s boys won 63-46 with Lindeman netting 20 while Chelsea’s Larry Kalinay added 25.
Lone Tree defeated University High 57 to 54 in an Eastern Iowa conference game. Van Dike led Lone Tree with 17 points while Ken ny Shaw added 24 and Dick Hartsock 20. Bowers scored 13 for University High to tie the scoring and keep it close.
Calmar boys beat Ossian 63-28 to reach 16 wins in 17 games. Russ Hillman scored 14 points for Calmar, while Ossian’s Blum contributed 10. Ossian girls defeated Calmar 64-32 as Janet Felix scored 49 and Rosetta Luzum added 21 for Calmar.
Winthrop girls edged Rowley 44 to 43 with Carol Shaffer scoring 21 including the deciding basket. Horn led Rowley with 21, while Winthrop boys also won 62 to 45 as Gallery contributed 17. Rehberg and McCormick each had 17 for Rowley.
Springville captured the Eastern Iowa Conference crown by defeating West Liberty 65 to 42. Ron Weisley scored 18 points to lead Springville, while Roberts added 12 and Pelzer 11 for West Liberty. Springville reserves also won 45 to 30.
Viola Center Point girls section champion team defeated Center Point 72 to 28 behind Campbell with 35 points while Vanda added 17 for the winners. In the boys game Viola equalized 56 to 53 as Zieser scored 27 for Center Point.
Garnavillo's girls upset Monticello Sacred Heart 78 to 50 in a preview game at Coe fieldhouse. Sandra Fiete scored 29 points and Jean Overbeck added 22 as the winners set up a district tournament clash next week.
Oxford Junction defeated the boys 57 to 36 behind Bob Sobatka's 24 points while Allen Ramsey scored nine for Lowden. Lowden's girls edged Oxford Junction 53 to 51 to reach a 25 2 season mark as Eleanor Lish had 26 for Lowden and Karen Bright 27 for Oxford Junction.
Wellman secured at least a share of the Ke-Wash conference crown by routing Kalona 88 to 35 as Ahrenfelt scored 17 to pace Wellman to its 15th straight victory Rhoads led Kalona with nine points The Wellman reserves added a 45 to 42 victory.
Elaine Matyk scored 36 to lift Shueyville past Toddville 76 67. Newman led Toddville with 44 while Swallom pushed Shueyville as Pospisil added nine.
The Walford boys defeated Shellsburg 55 to 50 in a fast breaking, tense game led by Bill Athoff with 25 points. Wayne Husted scored 18 and Larry Peters 17 for Shellsburg. The Shellsburg girls beat Walford 46 to 33 as Janette Claussen topped with 20 while Walford’s Bursha scored 28.
Postville defeats Elgin 63 to 54 in an Upper Iowa conference game. Jim Rima scored 19 and Ron Jarmes 17 for Postville while Don Sutter tallied 27 for Elgin. Postville reserves won the opener 36 to 30.
Strawberry Point earned a 38-34 win over Manchester as Manchester scored only two points in the final period. Jack Findley led the winners with 16 points while Russ Widner added nine. Manchester suffered its 17th loss in 18 starts.
Brooklyn's girls defeated Guernsey 50-38 as Jackie Gross led with 22 points. Bev Schraider scored 39 for Guernsey. In the boys game Brooklyn fell 56-53 despite John Schwiebert’s 17. Mac Williams paced Guernsey with 14.
The Dysart boys dominated Gladbrook with an 81 to 47 victory in a high school basketball game. Strong early defense and balanced scoring from Dysart led to a comfortable win.
Van Horne swept Blairstown as Gordon Kerkman led the boys with 19 points while Jon Hapgood added 16 for Blairstown. Van Horne’s Marilyn Steinford scored 19 in the girls game, and Jane Woolstrich tallied 14 for Blairstown.
Norman Bergman scored 28 points to carry Grundy Center to a 59-45 victory over Toledo. Weibold added 18 for Toledo in the boys basketball matchup.
Keystone defeated Benton County Leaders 64 to 47 as Mehlert scored 18 points. Preston led Belle Plaine with 19. The Plainer reserves won their game 42 to 40.
In a split meet, Waterville girls beat Luana 50 to 46 led by Krapfl with 32 points while the Monona boys edged Luana 58 55 with Mohs leading the Monona scoring.
Monona defeated West Union 73 to 61 in Upper Iowa Conference play as Hubacher scored 22 for the winners and Crandall led West Union with 23. The Monona Reserves also won.
Coggon girls defeated Edgewood 58 to 43 to claim the sectional championship led by Biederman with 18 points while Janette Jewell scored 23 for Edgewood. Edgewood boys lost 70 to 27 on the hosts with Stalneker leading the scorers with 23. Garner added eight for Coggon.
North English girls upset Brighton 55 52 as Marily Van Fleet scored 37 points. Alog led Brighton with 27. North English boys also won 50 29 led by King with 21 while Edwards scored nine for the losers.
Ruth Dostal scored the decisive goal from center ice in the second overtime, giving Clutier a dramatic victory here on Tuesday. Continued on Page 17, Col. 1.
The Green Bay Blue Jay baseball team of the Wisconsin State league announced Phil Seghi as manager for the coming season. Seghi, in his fifth year as manager, was named assistant to Green Bay President Len J. Reis. Seghi is a former Cedar Rapids resident.
