Call for Greater Independence for Census Bureau
The Gazette urges Congress to pass H.R. 4945 and S. 3167 to grant the Census Bureau more independence and transparency. A five year director term, unilateral testimony rights, control over personnel, annual reporting, and synchronized budget timing are proposed to reduce political influence and boost public trust. The measure has bipartisan support in both chambers and is praised by all former directors. The CBO says spending impact would be small. Get it done.
