Cedar Rapids Wind Projects Face Planning Hurdles

Cedar Rapids adopted an Wind Energy Conservation Systems ordinance in August to regulate wind turbines. Proposals include 2300 Johnson Ave NW to build a 37 foot turbine and two more, and Kirkwood Community College seeking a larger turbine on campus. The 61 foot turbine was dropped after neighbor objections. Both projects need conditional use permits and face stricter rules for large turbines.

Iowa City parents press for longer school lunch at Shimek

About 20 parents and five students met with Iowa City Schools Superintendent Stephen Marley in Shimek Elementary to demand a longer lunch period. They argue 15 minutes is insufficient and harms eating habits and peer social time. an online petition with about 75 signers supports the request.

Iowa Kids Count 2009 paints grim picture for families

The Iowa Kids Count report shows rising food assistance recipients up 140 percent and unemployment up 130 percent from 2000 to 2009. Eight indicators worsened while ten improved, with infant mortality down 28 percent and teen birth rate down 6.2 percent. overall student proficiency rose in some areas but one in three students still qualify for aid.
