Bill for community center land remains unpaid

The city faces an unpaid land bill for the block housing the Five Seasons Community Center. HUD loaned about 450000 interest free when the urban renewal project closed in 1974. the land was never sold and funds earmarked for HUD's share were unused.

Mount Mercy College students rented four Christmas trees for a Mount Mercy Choir performance at St. Matthew's Church. After the show two trees were moved to a neighbor, then two more reappeared with Earl May tags. Davidson found two trees in his garage and contacted Earl May manager Jerry Kluver, launching a police report as investigators pursued a stolen tree ring.

Quiet Iowa starts as nationwide farm strike unfolds

A midnight start in Eastern Iowa saw no official strike action locally though some farmers may delay marketings to test price effects. Trucker dies when driverless tractor crashes into bridge pillar

A Cedar Rapids man Alfred D. Christiansen, 26, died after the semi truck he rode in crushed against a Kansas City bridge pillar on I 70. His colleague Linda L. Null, 22, was critically injured with internal injuries and possible fractures. The 18 wheel truck, carrying Jack Daniels and Yellowstone whiskey, skidded 50 feet after entering a curve at high speed and rolled onto its side. The wreck closed westbound I 70 for hours as crews extricated the drivers and cleared the scene north of downtown Kansas City. The tractor belonged to Lawrence Lyons of Dysart. both drivers had been contracted for Hilt Trucking Lines of Council Bluffs since November 4.
