The Cedar Rapids Community School Board approves substantial staff reductions amid a push for a revised Iowa open meetings law prioritizing sensible openness. Also noted are political commentary on Carter era promises, a Regis-Kennedy boys basketball win aided by a bench player, NBA penalties for violence, and a chilly outlook with a weekend mix of sun and clouds.
A special Cedar Rapids task force recommended closing Eisenhower Elementary next year and Hayes and Fillmore by 1982 unless enrollments drop. The plan shifts to a special programs center at Eisenhower and moves 1,400 students across nine schools, with projected next-year savings around $47,000. Public hearings set January 10 to 17, final report due January 23.
A fire likely started by a hairdryer swept Aquinas Hall at Providence College in Providence Rhode Island early today. Seven female residents died and at least 15 were injured with one firefighter hurt. Two women perished leaping from windows as flames closed in with the ladder truck delayed.
Hawaii led all states with an average life expectancy of 73.6 years for both sexes for the decade ending 1971, while the District of Columbia recorded 65.7 years. Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, North Dakota and Nebraska followed among states with the longest lifespans. Iowa ranked seventh for men and women in 1971.
