President Ford says he will leave the White House with his chin up and pursue campus work, philanthropy, business, politics, and literature. He denies sulking after the election loss, expects to influence the Republican Party, write books, and keep busy after January 20.
A 13 month old Tucson girl born without a thymus has had her immune system restored and stepped out of a protective bubble for the first time. Nurse Barbara Quinn holds the infant as doctors note about 70 babies in 3.5 million share the condition and only eight others had the treatment. the child is expected to go home in January.
Public Improvements Commissioner Richard Phillips notes many calls about uncleared sidewalks. City code Section 9.11 requires occupants or owners to clear snow or ice within ten hours of falling, or spread material if removal is impractical, with city-clearing and cost assessment to the property if not followed.

The Iowa law allows executive sessions to discuss hiring or firing with reputational risk, or real estate purchases to avoid premature disclosure. A third broad exception permits other compelling reasons such as discussing legal strategy in lawsuits. No minutes are kept for these sessions, and enforcement has occurred mainly in blatant, persistent behind-closed-doors practices.
The Cedar Rapids city council faced criticism for enforcement gaps in the open meetings law. Reporters note informal discussions can be restricted, while two supervisors dining together could violate the law. The council held 19 regular and 18 special meetings in five months, with eight of the specials going into executive session.
A hunter, Patrick Urell aged 20, was killed when struck by a car on a gravel road three miles northeast of Watkins. Gerald Frese, 40, of rural Watkins, said he did not see the victims due to sun glare. No charges were filed as Benton County deputies continue investigations.
