Super packing plants seen by end of decade
Victor Preisser of Iowa Beef Processors told the Iowa Farm Bureau meeting that more than a dozen super plants, each slaughtering over a million cattle yearly, will emerge by the late 1980s. He said plants will integrate slaughtering, cutting and byproduct processing to cut costs and boost value of bones, blood, hides and other waste. He noted energy costs and boxed pork pressure, predicting leaner beef and less finishing of cattle as the most costly last 100 pounds are trimmed.
