German Sailor Turned American Diesel Chief
Rudi Mittag, once a machinist aboard the Graf Spee, fled internment in Argentina, married Virginia Hoover of Byron, Mich., and settled in Lowell as chief diesel engineer at the municipal power plant after a remarkable postwar journey from a wartime ship to U.S. citizenship. Mittag, now 36, leads a seven man crew and oversees two new 1.60 horsepower engines being prepared for the plant as he pursues naturalization.
