Special to The Gazette Marion notches its fifth straight win and second Wamac conference victory, cruising past Monticello 80-43. The Indians opened 15-6, led 43-21 by halftime, and built a 56-29 edge after three quarters, maintaining control throughout.
Marion senior and starting guard Tom Hutton was admitted to St Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids after a Friday check indicated he has a mild case of polio. He had been home sick since last Monday and his family reported improving condition with no fever noted.
Center Dareil Failor led the Indians with 30 points on 12 field goals and six free throws. Jerry Cox added 22 and Ron Altenberg 14 as Marion won the sophomore game 52-23, with Buzz Clark scoring 14 for the winners and Ron Landin trailing Monticello with eight.
Upper Iowa overcame a halftime deficit to beat Central College 72-68 on Friday. Joe Craig sank two late baskets to break a tie as UIU opened league play with the victory. Craig sparked the comeback with early second half threes, while UIU shot 46 percent to Central's 40.

Robinson, unmarked and elated, said he fought to a knockout and could have gone 20 rounds.
Osage defeated Oelwein 25-20 in a dual high school wrestling meet on Friday night. Osage won the last three bouts to clinch the victory as competitors like Ruehlow and Wilson produced decisive wins.
Iowa City St Marys powered past Cedar Rapids St Patrick’s 93 to 67 in St Pat’s gym to extend their nine game win streak. Dennis Walljasper scored 33 and Don Lumsden 26 as the Irish hit 42 percent and fired 86 shots to pull away early and cruise to the victory led by rebounding and fast start. Charley Schillig led St Pat’s with 20 points while Cunningham added 19.
In Dyersville I C hammers Xavier 71 52 as Cummins leads with 25 points and Pettinger trails with 23 for Xavier Pettinger also tops the opposition in the opener with 12 each for Willenberg and Helle Xavier 45 24 IC reserves beat Xavier in the curtain raiser.
In Jones county league action Onslow boys lost 70 56 to Martelle as Martin Thompson scored 18 for Onslow while Reed led Martelle with 21 points. Martelle girls won 80 67 led by Margaret Swartz with 30 points. Novak added 12 for Marengo and Toledo girls defeated Marengo 60 21.
Bob Topping scored 27 points to lift Wellman to a 57-53 win over West Chester in a Ke-Wash Conference game. The winners trailed throughout until the final minutes. West Chester reserves prevailed 43-40 in the earlier contest.
Belle Plaine defeated Sigourney 56 to 32 in South Iowa Cedar League action as SIGOURNEY–Kern and Allen each scored 13 points. Holle and Morrisson contributed six apiece for Sigourney.
The West Liberty squad split a doubleheader with Ainsworth and Mt Vernon. The girls beat Ainsworth 40 to 18 with Kennedy leading the scoring. In the boys game Mt Vernon defeated West Liberty 61 to 47 as Kruse and Knutson each scored 18 for Mt Vernon while Kirby added 18 for West Liberty.
In boys action Alpha-Alpha edged Wadena 63-58 with Ott scoring 24 and Everett 22 for Wadena. In the girls game Alpha-Alpha won 63-32 as Busche tallied 32 points while Davis led Wadena with 32.
Central City defeated Troy Mills 73 65 with Butterfield scoring 21 and Fresley adding 18 for Troy Mills. Avis led Troy Mills with 24. Central City also won the girls game 60 30 paced by Shay with 3 points.
Ossian girls toppled Rudolphinum of Protivin 53 to 44 with Janice Barnes Ness scoring 35 points. Protivin boys won 47 to 43 while Dale Mundt led the losers with 19 points.
The Toledo basketball team edged Marengo 51 to 49 with Hyer starring as the deciding factor in a tense contest. The game featured late lead changes and strong defensive stands, securing the win for Toledo.
Garnavillo surged to the lead in the Upper Mississippi conference by routing Mar-Mac 70 26 for its ninth straight win while Mar-Mac dropped to 10 losses. John Tuecke scored 35 points for Garnavillo and Smock added 10 for the visitors. The Mar-Mac girls also won 60 49 with Peterson scoring 41 and Janet Kainz contributing 26 for the opponents.
Madonna Bohlls scored 79 points to power Walker girls past Alburnett 106 to 93 while McBurney had 57 for Alburnett. Walker boys won 54 to 35 with Tuff Winn collecting 24 points and Jim Allen leading Alburnett with nine.
In a Northeast Iowa Catholic conference game OLVA outscored St. Wenceslaus 21 9 in the second quarter to build a lead and held on for a 67 59 victory. St. Wene led 18 16 after one period but OLVA surged then maintained the edge. Bill Colbert led St. Wene with 23 points while Gordon Phillips poured in 27 for OLVA.
Brooks trade Meyer to Cubs bringing Russ Meyer back to Chicago after years of dominance over them. The deal sends Don Elston to the Brooklyn Dodgers while Meyer, 6 2 record last season, rejoins Cubs as a veteran right hander with a 24 3 career mark against Chicago since 1948.
