Rock Island tracks draw bids from KC Southern and Chicago and North Western

Iowa officials hear competing plans to salvage the bankrupt Rock Island Railroad. Kansas City Southern proposes a direct Iowa to Minnesota route with Gulf exports, aiming for eight to ten day grain trips. Chicago and North Western seeks a trunk line to serve major grain terminals, reducing competition. The Rock Island trustee pursues a reduced core system between Chicago Omaha and Kansas City Minneapolis, with 70 percent of the railroad to be sold if plan fails. The five year plan and final action loom in two weeks.
