Acme Burner and Smythe Sign Co Gutted by Fire
A southwest Cedar Rapids building housing the Acme Oil Burner Co and the Smythe Sign Co was gutted by fire early Friday amid 10 degree temperatures. Firefighters confined the blaze to a two story brick structure and saved an adjacent apartment. Fireman Vernon Pickerell fell ten feet from a ladder and received X rays at Mercy Hospital before being released. The fire started in the Acme section and roof collapse occurred over that area.

Four Engineers Die in Homemade Rocket Explosion
In Lawrence Kansas at Callery Chemical Co plant a home made rocket exploded injuring four others. Dead are Charles Lattes 31 William Reynolds 29 and Frank Wengrzyn 24. Injured are Richard Wright 26 Elmer Boyd 38 and two maintenance men. Plant manager R G Schmidt says the rocket exploded in a waste area during an engineer designed experiment. The plant opened last spring and employs about 175 people.
