Mrs. Frank Young Ethel R. Young widow of Frank Young died Wednesday after brief illness at Cedar Rapids residence. Born April 11 1893 in Hand County South Dakota she is survived by two daughters Mrs. Paul Starry Marion and Mrs. Leon Brimer Cedar Rapids a son Bruce Young Cedar Rapids ten grandchildren four great grandchildren a brother Faye Everett Millburn and three sisters all of Cedar Rapids. Memorial services at Turner Chapel East 3 p.m. Friday by Rev. James W. Fouke Faith United Methodist Church. Burial Cedar Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at Turner East until 2 30 p.m. Friday. The casket will not be opened after the service.

Cedar Rapids resident since 1951 Gertrude Amador died in Iowa City after a brief illness. Born September 21, 1903 in Bunch Oklahoma she was J H Cloonan’s daughter and married Oscar Amador in El Paso Texas. Services at Turner Chapel East 1 30 p m Saturday with Very Rev Canon D A Loferski of St Johns Episcopal Church. Turner East hours until 1 p m Saturday.

AMES The highway commission on Wednesday authorized land purchases for two Eastern Iowa road projects. In Dubuque county parcels from Edward N. Meier for 200 dollars Frank Devine for 6365 dollars and Daniel J. Nugent for 700 dollars will be acquired for U.S. 151 improvements. In Linn county land purchases were approved from Judith E. Gilman for 14400 dollars and M N Inc for 10250 dollars for Interstate 380 work. The commission granted a special public road connection to Iowa 172 outside Elgin city limits to Robert Falk on the north side of the highway. The maintenance engineer was authorized to sign an upkeep agreement with Independence for primary road extensions with a 928 dollar payment at the standard maintenance rate. A supplemental agreement with Illinois will have Iowa maintain the 1 74 bridge at Bettendorf and Illinois take over the 1 80 bridge at LeClaire effective December 31.
U S ambassador to Poland, Walter Stoessel, met briefly with a Chinese diplomat at a social event in Warsaw. Press Officer John King offered no details and did not indicate new talks. The last formal meeting with Red China was January 1968. a February 1969 session was postponed by the Chinese after a Dutch asylum case.
Douglas Toms of Washington state motor vehicles directs has accepted the position as director of the national highway safety bureau Rep. Pelly said Thursday. He will report directly to Secretary Volpe to ensure personal attention to highway safety. Previously he acted in an advisory role on federal highway safety.
Defense lawyers for Richard Zacek won permission from Municipal Judge Loren Hullinger Jr to inspect state evidence in his murder case. Zacek, 29, faces first degree murder in the Oct 19 death of Jean Halverson, a 17 year old Washington high student. The judge allowed copies of autopsy and FBI reports only while excluding a police photo, fingerprints, and a taped interrogation. The preliminary hearing was postponed to next Wednesday with public and press excluded.
In Brooksville Florida a band of long haired youths attacked a state employed road grader operator Charles Gibens 38 from Tampa claiming to avenge arrests at a West Palm Beach rock festival. Gibens received a cut above the eye and a minor knife wound after being restrained and threatened with a pistol and other weapons. He was treated at a hospital and released.

Eugene Hoppe of 327 Twenty second avenue southwest sues Emil A. Klumpar for 10042 alleging Klumpar assaulted Hoppe’s son Henry during an eighth grade physical education class at Wilson Junior High School on November 17. The petition cites neck scratches, facial bruising, torn shirt, and multiple blows and throws. It seeks 1650 for medical costs 5 for the shirt 5000 for mental and emotional distress and punitive damages matching the amount. A separate assault and battery charge is pending in municipal court with a Dec. 18 plea date.
Both parties in the Leland Wells Mary Anne Wells custody dispute filed notices in Linn district court to appeal the Oct 31 Iowa Supreme Court decision. Judge William Eads awarded custody of a 12 year old son to the father, overturning a prior Supreme Court ruling. The case has run in district court since 1965.
A stockholder of Iowa Power and Light Co filed suit in Polk county district court to halt the proposed merger with Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric Co of Davenport.

Absentee ballots for the December 16 Public Library referendum are available at the Cedar Rapids city hall voter registration office on the third floor. Registered voters out of town may request ballots by mail or vote in person. Mailed ballots must be returned by December 15, which is also the last day to vote absentee at city hall. The office hours are 8 am to 5 pm weekdays and 10 am to 2 pm Saturday for unregistered residents.
The Cedar Rapids Parkade will be open Sundays through the holiday shopping period after a successful trial. Eleven Sundays were evaluated with 371 vehicles and $59.20 in revenue last week. Parkade traffic and revenue for November totaled 29,589 tickets and $7,615.80, averaging 304.63 dollars daily. Cash paid 6,230.10 and Park and Shop stamps 1,385.70. The busiest day was November 1 with 1,759 tickets. the slowest was Sunday November 30.
The Federal Trade Commission will study whether household detergents with enzymes pose health risks. A Public Health Service report cites dermatitis flu like and asthmatic symptoms among workers exposed to high enzyme concentrations and asks if prolonged home use could cause similar issues.
