Jewelry and china gifts brighten homes with tableware, crystal glassware, and silver items. Centerpieces, candy dishes, and bud vases join clocks and bar accessories as stylish yet practical holiday offerings for men and women alike.
The Iowa Highway Commission will run training programs at four area community colleges including Kirkwood in Cedar Rapids to fill about 100 engineering technician vacancies. Recruits will be high school graduates, paid $300 a month during training, with future raises on full-time placement. Programs will run 10 to 12 weeks with costs around $50 000 for 50 students and $100 000 for 100. Veterans returning from Vietnam will be included in recruitment.

Israeli troops raided southeast Lebanon destroying a guerilla camp at Jebbel Rus on Mt Hermon’s southwest slope. One Israeli soldier was killed and five wounded while 12 Arabs reportedly died and many wounded. A large cache of weapons and damaged equipment were seized. This was the first raid since Lebanon agreed to permit guerrillas to operate in parts of the south.
Concrete is poured for Chicago’s new O’Hare Plaza, a six building complex near O’Hare Airport. A two lane expressway, 3 inches thick, will connect Chicago and Milwaukee as part of the development.
A policeman investigating a traffic accident in Tokyo had part of his left ear bitten off by a drunken driver. The assailant was seized and the officer received medical treatment. Further details on motive and charges were not disclosed.
