Iowa alcohol sales hit record in spirits as beer stalls
Iowa's Alcoholic Beverages Division reported a record year for liquor and wine with total sales near 319.3 million dollars, up 5.4 percent from the prior year while beer sales declined about one percent to 73.8 million gallons. Wholesale spirits sales reached roughly 277.7 million, surpassing the previous record by 14.2 million. Taxes and fees added about 128.7 million, including 104.2 million to the general fund and 20.4 million to the Public Health Department for substance abuse programs. Division spokesman Robert Bailey attributed the rise to stronger spirits demand among consumers, possibly helped by millennial trends.
