Marion library plans bigger facility tied to private development

The Marion Public Library Board pitches a 47 000 square foot library in a mixed use Ryan Companies project on 11th Street with 20 000 square feet of retail and about 55 apartments. The city would lease and eventually own space in the privately built building while razing the current 24 500 square foot library. A spring public vote is planned to explain the plan despite no bond need, with the library to cover about 24000 for a special election.

Marion plans a spring bond election to finance a new public library with a potential up to 1 million dollars. The measure would require 60 percent to pass, though the council could proceed without a bond if votes fail. The poll will gauge voter support for the financing option.
