Group homes urged for Linn County Care Facility residents

Laundry room burglars nabbed in Hiawatha apartments

Two Indiana men Samuel E. Fields and Arthur D Bouque were charged with second degree burglary and possession of burglary tools after police stopped a pickup near 805 and 825 Brandon Ave in Hiawatha. They were arrested shortly before 9:30 a.m. and jailed in Linn County.

Nine charges filed after Cedar Rapids chase

An 18 year old Cedar Rapids man faced nine traffic charges after a brief chase on the southeast side Tuesday. Joe C. Pledge 1018 Fifth St SE was charged with attempting to elude reckless driving three counts of disobeying a traffic sign operating without registration an equipment violation failure to give a continuous signal and failure to have a driver s license. The chase began around 430 pm in the 400 block of 14th Street SE when officers spotted a motorcycle without plates northbound on 14th Street. Police stopped the vehicle and arrested Pledge at his home. the motorcycle was impounded. He was released from Linn County Jail Wednesday without bond after a court appearance.

Linn County tests lead in waste oil road samples

Linn County safety director Norm Popenhagen said additional oil samples will be taken Monday after last week's tests showed lead at 50 parts per million. Other metals were normal. The waste oil from a Springfield Illinois company was spread two weeks ago on Robins Road, Miller's Road, and Chain Lakes Road.

Three Burglaries Reported in Cedar Rapids

Police reports describe three separate burglaries Tuesday in Cedar Rapids. Ward Long lost a $325 lawnmower from 423 14th St SE after burglars removed a garage door. Arthur Toms reported boating gear valued over $500 taken from a boat at 2921 Circle Drive NE. Harold McLellan’s home at 424 First St SW yielded $275 in cash and coins after a screen was removed from an open living room window.

Verdict Rejects Family's Suit Over Vernon Middle School Injury

A Linn District Court jury ruled against Brett Christiansen and his father in a $50,000 and $20,000 claim related to permanent injuries and medical expenses after an arm wrestling incident at Vernon Middle School in Marion in November 1980. Defendants included Marion Independent School District and the Cox family.

Cedar Rapids Council backs Kazimour amid dispute

The Cedar Rapids City Council issued a vote of confidence for Jan Kazimour chair of the Civil Service Commission after a heated exchange with Policemen's Protective Association leader Stan McClurg. The council praised Kazimour's nine years of service and urged her to attend the NACSC conference in Washington, D.C., Oct. 9-13.

Cedar Rapids officials defended the sale of two blighted properties for 1333 dollars total to Southeast Improvement Co after buying them in 1981 for 23 450. The buyer was the sole bidder and council members argued the move aims to boost the tax base and remove blight while facing a skeptical citizen who questioned potential conflicts of interest.
