Cedar Rapids sees 11 arson fires since July 31

Fire officials report 11 deliberately set blazes in Cedar Rapids since July 31. Tuesday two arsons struck a vacant residence at 4208 Benton St NE and the Rock Island roundhouse on Fourth Street NE. Three children were later charged with reckless use of fire in the Benton Street blaze.

Mayor silent on police blast at Kazimour resignation call

Cedar Rapids Mayor Don Canney declined comment on a plea from the Cedar Rapids Policemen's Protective Association for Jan Kazimour to resign as chair of the Civil Service Commission. The association cited a July tape in which Kazimour referred to Stan McClurg as a son of a bitch after McClurg and Detective Hansel left a meeting. Kazimour says anger over threats by McClurg fueled her remark and testified the recorder was accidentally turned on.

Crossing work to close C Avenue NE in Bowman Woods

Residents in Bowman Woods on Cedar Rapids northeast side face a temporary crossing closure as repairs on the C Avenue NE railroad crossing near Blairs Ferry Road NE begin next Monday. Public Improvements Commissioner Wayne Murdock says the five day closure is to provide a winter workaround while seeking a permanent crossing next spring.

Cedar Rapids teen denied stabbing charge in juvenile court

Sixteen year old Frank Junior Pledge denied allegations Tuesday in Linn Juvenile Court that he stabbed a Cedar Rapids man without justification. He will stand trial Sept. 30 on a willful injury delinquency charge. He is accused of stabbing Dean Krumviede as he exited a car in the 500 block of 12th Street SE after a brick was thrown. Police said a prior conflict occurred two days earlier. Pledge is held at Linn Shelter Care Facility.

YWCA fund drive to buy downtown Cedar Rapids property

The Cedar Rapids YWCA with trustees from Milwaukee Road plans to close a 3000000 deal on 2.5 acres across from the new library. A 350000 fund drive was announced to cover site purchase and razing costs with a kickoff set for Sept 15.
