Barge traffic resumes as Lock 15 reopens after repairs
Barge traffic returns to the Mississippi as the main lock at Lock and Dam 15 reopens after emergency repairs. Seventeen vessels waited near the Quad Cities at 3 p.m. Wednesday, four downriver and five upriver by midmorning Thursday. The American Queen, docked three days, led the way as the first through the repaired lock.

Davenport Driver Sentenced in Fatal I-80 Crash
Allen Ray Reed, 40, was sentenced to 17 years for vehicular homicide in a December crash on Interstate 80 near Davenport. A pregnant woman died and the fetus did not survive. another van passenger died about a month later. Reed was also ordered to pay 150000 in restitution and funeral costs. He fled after rear ending the minivan.

Inmates Omitted From 2000 Census In Fort Madison
Fort Madison Iowa officials discovered in census review that inmate counts at the Iowa State Penitentiary were not included in the 2000 tally. The drop from 11 618 to 10 750 reduces population by 868 and impacts ward boundaries and road funds. Penitentiary spokesman Ron Welder cited 894 inmates on Wednesday. City Manager Bill Kelly said officials may file a challenge to correct the miscount.
