Union Pacific freight train crew sought counseling after they struck and killed Cedar Rapids man Matthew J. Northrup at the J Street crossing. Northrup, 26, ignored flashing signals and lowered gates as two trains passed. the second train hit his southbound pickup, killing him instantly. The crew, uninjured, described the incident as traumatic and received peer support. Northrup’s death was Cedar Rapids’s second traffic fatality of the year.
