Abduction and Robbery At Cedar Rapids Service Station
Karl Smith, 19, attendant at Standard Oil on First avenue and First street SW, was abducted and robbed at 3:15 am by two bandits. They took $75, left $2.50, bound him with tape, drove toward DeWitt in a 1988 Ford V-8 with California plates, and later released him near a gravel road before he sought help. Police broadcast the suspect car and described the pair after Smith alerted Davenport officials.

Civil War Vet J A Hildebrand 92 Dies in Cedar Rapids
J A Hildebrand a Civil War veteran and former city and county assessor died at 2 30 a m Monday at his home 1726 Third avenue SE after years of ill health. Born July 5 1844 in Baden Baden Germany he served in the Fifteenth Michigan and Thirtieth Michigan regiments and later moved to Marion Cedar Rapids where he ran a lumber business until 1880. He was assessor until 1915 and survived by two sons a granddaughter and a great granddaughter with funeral services set for Wednesday at Beatty chapel and burial in Oak Hill cemetery.
