Des Moines and much of Iowa face record high temperatures with readings near 105 to 110 degrees in late August. A stagnating air mass over northwest Iowa kept cooling breezes away, but forecasters expect scattered showers and cooler conditions Tuesday night into Wednesday as the hot spell abates.
Numerous notes from Oxford to Olin, including a Hrdlicka reunion in Oxford with many Cedar Rapids and Iowa City attendees, a La Porte City marriage, DeWitt church sale, Klatch of baptisms and dedications, and district school openings. Also reports on reunions in Monticello and Columbus Junction and a fatal skiing-like accident near Monticello.
Mrs Winifred Van Etten of Iowa City maintains her prize novel I Am The Fox is not an autobiography. She spoke at a Bookshop tea during the book’s publication by Brown Little and Company, saying the heroine Selma Temple is not drawn from her life.
Des Moines reports the Iowa State Fair will unfold on a grand eight day scale with premiums totalling 104430 and livestock worth a million on display. Improvements reach 300000, including 100000 to remodel the swine pavilion, as President Roosevelt and Gov Landon visit.
In West Union Howard Stephens a Hawkeye youth, has a fractured back and is hospitalized. Howard Kohler age 10 suffers cuts and bruises. Ralph Blockhus has a sprained back. All were hurt when the Blockhus car was struck from the rear by the Ed Kohler milk car. Kohler suffers two broken ribs. Helen and Odney Blockus have bruises. Both cars wrecked and Kohler milk shipment destroyed.
Shellsburg firemen announce a two day ox roast celebration with a Friday morning musical program and an address by William DeFoe. Food at noon, street sports, dancing, boxing, and entertainment by the Little German Band, Shellsburg band, and Edna K Dieman studio pupils. Fire Chief Clarence Spurgeon oversees events.
John P. Hertert, 51, attorney and Shelby County Democratic chairman, died Tuesday of heart disease at his home in Harlan. He is survived by his widow and four daughters. The death was reported by Associated Press.
Iowa farmers received 112,731,489 in AAA rental and benefit payments through July 1, 1936, the Department of Agriculture reported. Corn-hog benefits dominate Iowa totals, with Pottawattamie County the top county recipient at 2,608,292.
Tama Mesquakie Indian Robert Young Bear was turned over to federal officers by Sheriff E. O. Harris on a charge of passing counterfeit money at the pow wow. His wife accompanied him, and concession operators identified him as the man who passed four half dollar coins for small purchases. He returned the change and admitted the act.
Republicans of Fayette county will hold an organization meeting at the court house in West Union at 8 p m Monday. R P Strauch of Elgin, county chairman, announced the event. Former State Senator M D Pitt of Logan will be the speaker.
Sam Patterson, 63, was hurled to the pavement when his wagon was struck by a car driven by Roscoe Neighbors of La Porte City on South Riverside drive. The wagon was demolished and Neighbors said he fell asleep at the wheel.
Monticello voters approve a twenty year franchise for the Iowa Electric Company of Cedar Rapids by an eight to one margin. A total of 784 ballots in favor and 98 against were cast. The previous franchise, lasting five years, expired in June.
Des Moines AP says Mrs. Alex Miller reports seven month 1936 automobile deaths fell 29 from 1935 totals. July fatalities were 52, up one from last July. seven month deaths total 257 vs 286 in 1925. Pedestrian deaths 13 in July. 121 pedestrians injured. peak accidents Saturday. most between 6 and 7 p m.
Des Moines AP report: Democratic state central committee will accept no funds from liquor manufacturers doing business with the Iowa Liquor Control Commission. Lester Drennen and Bernard Manley disclosed a proposed advertising handbook funded by manufacturers, which was rejected. The party now enforces a voluntary campaign contribution plan for state employees, amid past internal squabbles over the funding method.
Elma residents Elma Sexter Ludwig Semrad Wallace Reiley Ed Remrodt Arnold Remrodt and John Gardner pled guilty to dynamiting fish. They received fines totaling 375 dollars plus 511.35 dollars in costs. Each defendant was granted fifteen days to pay. State officer John V Hodgson and Sheriff Albert Pederson conducted the apprehension.
Gov Clyde L Herring voiced strong accord with American Legion goals at the state convention in Clinton praising the universal draft program the legion’s war veterans support and the highway safety patrol He urged continued fight against communism and fascism and called the Legion a steadying force in a troubled world he also highlighted signed bills aligned with legion aims including aid for disabled veterans widows and orphans and child welfare programs.
Iowa City family suffers as seven year old Robert Darling remains in critical condition after a weekend auto crash that also killed Ezra L. Darling aged 31 and Orville Seydel aged 21. Mrs Darling and three daughters recover from less serious injuries. Funeral services set for Wednesday at 1 30 p m Hohenschuh mortuary with burial at Millersburg cemetery.
Carl Nelson pleaded not guilty to driving while intoxicated before Justice T M Fairchild in Iowa City. Highway Patrolman S J Shaffer filed the charge, with bond set at 500 dollars. Frank Kopecky, a Swisher farmer, was fined 50 dollars and costs for reckless driving after allegedly striking a Cedar Rapids man on Highway 161 near Shueyville. the other man's name was not learned.
An 11 year old Strawberry Point boy, Richard Peick, ran from behind a truck into Noble Pugh’s car path and was knocked down. He received six stitches for a head cut at Mercy hospital in Oelwein. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W L Peick and was helping H V Steward deliver milk.
