Six Injured In Crash With Milk Car At West Union

In West Union Howard Stephens a Hawkeye youth, has a fractured back and is hospitalized. Howard Kohler age 10 suffers cuts and bruises. Ralph Blockhus has a sprained back. All were hurt when the Blockhus car was struck from the rear by the Ed Kohler milk car. Kohler suffers two broken ribs. Helen and Odney Blockus have bruises. Both cars wrecked and Kohler milk shipment destroyed.

John P. Hertert Dies at 51 in Harlan

John P. Hertert, 51, attorney and Shelby County Democratic chairman, died Tuesday of heart disease at his home in Harlan. He is survived by his widow and four daughters. The death was reported by Associated Press.

Hold Tama Indian For Passing Out Counterfeit Coins

Tama Mesquakie Indian Robert Young Bear was turned over to federal officers by Sheriff E. O. Harris on a charge of passing counterfeit money at the pow wow. His wife accompanied him, and concession operators identified him as the man who passed four half dollar coins for small purchases. He returned the change and admitted the act.

Wagon Crash Injures Man On Riverside Drive

Sam Patterson, 63, was hurled to the pavement when his wagon was struck by a car driven by Roscoe Neighbors of La Porte City on South Riverside drive. The wagon was demolished and Neighbors said he fell asleep at the wheel.

Monticello Grants 20 Year Franchise to Iowa Electric

Monticello voters approve a twenty year franchise for the Iowa Electric Company of Cedar Rapids by an eight to one margin. A total of 784 ballots in favor and 98 against were cast. The previous franchise, lasting five years, expired in June.

Democrats Spurn Liquor Manufacturer Contributions in Iowa

Des Moines AP report: Democratic state central committee will accept no funds from liquor manufacturers doing business with the Iowa Liquor Control Commission. Lester Drennen and Bernard Manley disclosed a proposed advertising handbook funded by manufacturers, which was rejected. The party now enforces a voluntary campaign contribution plan for state employees, amid past internal squabbles over the funding method.

Pleads Not Guilty To Intoxicated Driving

Carl Nelson pleaded not guilty to driving while intoxicated before Justice T M Fairchild in Iowa City. Highway Patrolman S J Shaffer filed the charge, with bond set at 500 dollars. Frank Kopecky, a Swisher farmer, was fined 50 dollars and costs for reckless driving after allegedly striking a Cedar Rapids man on Highway 161 near Shueyville. the other man's name was not learned.

Strawberry Point Boy Injured After Car Strike

An 11 year old Strawberry Point boy, Richard Peick, ran from behind a truck into Noble Pugh’s car path and was knocked down. He received six stitches for a head cut at Mercy hospital in Oelwein. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W L Peick and was helping H V Steward deliver milk.
