U S Goal Pushing for Liberal Trade Policies
Washington AP report outlines U S aims in GATT talks to keep a market directed export oriented farm policy. David L Hume of the Foreign Agricultural Service says multilateral negotiations affect U S access to foreign markets and are a key policy issue for American agriculture this decade. Exports cover large shares of wheat rice soybeans and corn, and could force acreage controls or subsidies if markets tighten. Farm exports totaled 22 1 billion in the last completed fiscal year and are expected near that level again.

Farm Mews on GATT Principles
Hume voiced support for GATT principles as essential to expanding world trade. He urged that rules enable mutual advantage, allow production efficiencies to benefit foreign customers, and require two way exchange of production and marketing efficiencies. He warned that U.S. farmers must reciprocate for free access to foreign markets.

NFO Ordered to Repay $1 Million to Grain Trust Participants
Des Moines UPI reports the National Farmers Organization is allowed to repay $1 million to former Iowa Grain Trust participants, bringing total distributions to about $4 million. Judge William Stuart continues overseeing the group’s finances amid SEC efforts to place it under a court-appointed receiver. About $15 million remains unpaid. The NFO repaid $2.5 million last May, with $2.8 million raised through a member-funded program to meet Grain Trust debts. The Trust, once a vehicle for marketing NFO grain, held about $3.2 million in assets before an export spike and other marketing shifts created obligations and a $20 million debt when dissolved in 1973.
