Medical district plans face tax funds and access issues

The plan centers on a medical district to anchor PCI and Mercy services in Cedar Rapids. A self supporting district would tax commercial and industrial properties, while residential and most nonprofits would have exemptions or partial charges. PCI cites $8 million parking ramp funding and TIF benefits, with ISU data projecting $1.598 million yearly in total city taxes from the mall and ramp. Mercy funds its cancer center privately, with no tax dollars involved.

Crystal Lake Dam Collapse and Community Aftermath

The Crystal Lake Corporation formed in 1920 by lake residents faced private ownership issues after the dam failed. Homeowners paid $5 000 each to rebuild, seeking state help which was not forthcoming. Dam reconstruction in 1988 briefly restored the lake, but the 35 acre site never fully recovered the campers, fishermen, and swimmers. Liability insurance was dropped as costs rose.
