Lawmakers Benefit From Subsidies Drawn by Iowa Leaders
Iowa lawmakers and officials receive annual USDA farm subsidy checks. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Sen. Chuck Grassley, and Rep. Leonard Boswell are among recipients who influence farm policy and the next farm bill, due to take effect in 2012. Grassley and Boswell list $16,235 in payments from 1995 to 2009 and sit on key appropriations panels. Critics say subsidies largely flow to large farms and wealthy landowners, though the Environmental Working Group finds no impropriety.
