Tammy Thomson, 17, of Stanwood won the state Shorthorn Lassie title at the Iowa State Fair. The new Lassie will represent the Shorthorn breed across the state during the coming year. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Thomson.
Earl Arthur of Maynard presented the supreme champion Holstein Sherry originator's Arthur Acre Originator's Sherry, a three year old female, at the Fayette county fair dairy show. Other winners included Regancrest Farms for reserve Holstein, Earl Lehmann Elgin for Ayr shires champion, Nabholt Jerseys West Union for Jersey grand and reserve, Frank Livesind Waukon for Guernsey grand, William Church Riceville for Brown Swiss grand, AG Swiss Farms Decorah for reserve, and Ron Gruenwald Lost Nation for Milking Short horn grand and reserve.
Prices paid to Iowa farmers for grain slumped last week with No 2 yellow corn falling five to seven cents per bushel to 1.52 to 1.56 at central Iowa elevators, the lowest since May 1973. Soybeans also declined 32 to 34 cents from the prior week.
UPI reports the agriculture department found illegal stilbestrol residues in nearly 2 percent of beef cattle livers sampled in the first half of 1977, a sharp rise from the prior year. Sulfa drug residues in pork also increased in the second quarter despite warnings and possible tighter controls. Stilbestrol is a synthetic female hormone used to speed growth with regulations allowing withdrawal before slaughter. Cedar Rapids August rainfall stood at 7.43 inches versus a 2.97 inch norm ten years ago.
