Merz Withdraws From Cedar Rapids School Board Race

Walter Merz announced he is withdrawing from director district No 4 of the Cedar Rapids Community School Board due to a housing move outside the district. He plans to support youth education and may seek a future board post. Ronald Moore is the only other candidate for the 3 year post. Incumbents Rosser and Weinhardt run unopposed for at large seats.

Building inspection fee hike proposed by city council

Ed Winter, building department director, told the council that fees for building inspections lag behind rising costs. A 10 percent valuation increase is proposed to align fees with construction costs, mainly affecting dwellings and surrounding buildings. The council asked Winter to draft a formal resolution.

Police reported paint vandalism in the 3800 to 4100 blocks of Six Edith Avenue SW. Red paint and white shoe polish were used on at least 10 cars. no arrests were reported by Tuesday.

Robbery at Pay-Less Shoestore Nets Over $100

A black male about 5 feet 10 inches and 145 pounds robbed Pay-Less Self Service Shoes at 3525 First Avenue SE Monday night. He did not display a weapon but hinted at one in his pocket. Two female employees were on duty at 8 15 p.m. and were ordered to the floor while cash from the register was taken. no injuries or shots were reported.

Name Change Likely For Dehydrated Water Product

Cedar Rapids man faced “substantial punitive damages” unless he drops the dehydrated water label. Engineer Bill Werth, owner of Nature's Best Genuine Dehydrated Water, says a Chicago attorney claims Bernard Food Industries owns the trademark. Werth has sold 30 to 40 bottles at 2.95 each since early summer and will rename if the claim stands.
