In July 162 750 members quit the Russian Communist Party about 1.5 percent of its 11 million members. Ivan Polozkov, elected in June to lead the Russian branch, cited factory workers as a major share of the defections. He warned the drop-outs followed the June party congress dominated by hard-liners opposed to Gorbachev reforms.
State treasury officials will auction in September more than 800 items from unclaimed safe deposit boxes held in a state vault. Treasurer Mike Fitzgerald said we have uncovered a treasure. Details on page 2A.

Aunna Schmidt two of Center Point was placed in a playful jail at Ushers Ferry after an incident involving Cedar Rapids man Don Spaethe. Kathy Schmidt, mother of the two girls and a son, says the youths were arrested during Pioneer Days on charges from fighting to bank robbery. The children were released on good behavior or for singing a song.
Moscow reports show grain belt harvest lagging as political measures fail to accelerate collection. By mid August harvests of wheat and vegetables are well below last year, prompting mobilization of 100000 troops and emergency directives to farm districts.
Renowned psychologist B F Skinner died at 86 at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge Massachusetts. He shaped behavioral psychology with experiments and writings such as Walden Two and Beyond Freedom and Dignity. His daughter Julie Vargas said he remained active to the end and died from complications of leukemia.
